The tragic hurricane took 77 lives, and left billions of dollars of damage, which will leave the city rebuilding for many years. Many people in the city did not know what they would be coming back to, once the flood waters receded. Amid the devastation, Houstonians held onto one hope; that their Major League Baseball team, who had finished the season with a 101-61 record (the third best record in the Majors) would make it to the World Series . They had made the playoffs as a number two seed, entering the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox. The Astros had cruised past the Red Sox in a dominating fashion, their next opponent would be the New York Yankees. Following the Yankees come back from two games down against the Cleveland Indians, winning the series in five games, no one thought the Yankees had a chance with a restless bullpen and players. The Astros had taken the first two games, heading to the Bronx with a two game to none lead. The Yankees had suddenly won three straight games, putting pressure on the Astros to win two straight games back at home; which they did, putting them in their second World Series in franchise history. The World Series showcased two 100 win teams over the season, with the Dodgers (104-58) having the best record in baseball and the Astros (101-61) with the third best record in baseball. This series was historic as Houston had gone through so much with Hurricane Harvey and trying to clinch their first World Series title in it’s history; while the Dodgers were going for their first title since 1987. The Dodgers took game one, then the Astros fought back in extra innings with a 7-6 win, heading back to Houston, tied one to one in game wins. Houston took game three; then The Dodgers bounced back with a 6-2 win in game four. Game five was the most exciting World Series game, and also the second longest, lasting five hours and seventeen minutes. Game five set a records for the most home runs in the World Series and for the length of the game. Game six was exciting, as the Dodgers stole game six in the top of the 9th, scoring three runs in the last 5 innings. The World Series was heading to its second game seven in the second straight year, the first time since 2001-2002. Matt Slocum/Associated Press Game seven, possibly the two greatest words in baseball, the stakes were high, and the eyes were on the prize for the Dodgers and the Astros. Los Angeles was the home for game seven, where it would crown a world champion. The game started off with a George Springer double in the first inning, then a stolen base. Springer scored off a throwing error by the Dodgers; and later, Albuquerque native and game five hero, Alex Bregman helped score the second run of the game. The Dodgers failed to score many times, which helped lead the Astros through most of game seven. George Springer, who would later be named World Series MVP hit a three-run home run in the 2nd inning, giving the Astros a 5-0 lead. The Astros would hang on, and win its first world series in its history, and it’s first World Series in the state of Texas. The celebration in Houston had begun, they will celebrate the world champion Astros with a parade on Friday, November 3rd at 2:00 pm.
