Thirty-year-old Jonathan Smith became a hero for his actions. Smith first got his nephews and nieces to safety, then he decided to go back into the concert lawn to help other people get to safety. Smith helped more than two dozen people before he got shot in the left side of the neck, and in the arm. Smith is in the healing process, but he's not sure if the doctors will be able to remove the bullet from his neck.
Smith has always been known for being a Chargers fan. Smith is part of a fan club known as WeChargeLa. The organization was how the team (the Chargers) contacted Smith. The Chargers donated items for Smith’s medical expenses. The team also invited Smith’s family to their upcoming game with the Denver Broncos on October twenty-second. The family consisted of Smith, his three children, and the children’s mother. The children were Jonathan Jr, Jayden-starr, and Julian. The family toured the practice facility. Smith met coach Anthony Lynn at the beginning of practice. Smith posted pictures and spoke to several players in the locker room. These players were Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, and Melvin Gordon. Smith was also asked to break the center of the Chargers post practice huddle. “It’s a true blessing,” Smith said, clutching a Chargers cap that was covered with autographs. “They could have just sent me an autographed football or something, but they went the whole nine yards for me and my family.”

Diving For Beauty Danica Daniels ‘20 Over the past couple of years a new trend has been growing in the beauty world. Beauty vloggers from all around have been going to Sephora and Ulta Beauty to dumpster dive for high end makeup products ranging from ‘'Urban Decay’, ‘'Benefit Cosmetics’, ‘'Anastasia’, ‘Gucci’ perfume and many more. Although this has been a growing trend, James Jugan has been dumpster diving and reselling the makeup since 1978. The reasons behind this growing trend is to save money and reduce waste. Ulta and Sephora throw away hundreds of dollars worth of makeup each day. According to Broadly a YouTuber named Shelbi (Shelbizleee) shows her viewers $2,000 worth of makeup collected from a dumpster behind Ulta. Some Beauty vloggers say that you should not get any liquid products such as eyeliner, mascara or lipstick because they cannot be sanitized. As far as lipstick goes tubed lipstick can be sanitized but again liquid lipstick cannot be. Products that have a pump only needs to be sanitized on the outside because nobody touches the product. https://youtu.be/fUcgUDACcB8 https://youtu.be/PGqThu3tjo0 https://youtu.be/tINEP0RqxzU https://broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/vb4exj/the-beauty-vloggers-dumpster-diving-for-high-end-makeup https://www.teenvogue.com/story/beauty-vloggers-dumpster-diving-youtube/amp Not Your Typical Blue Skies Christina Maldonado '19 On October 16th of 2017, London experienced something not out of the blue, but red. The sky of London was soaked with a dark orange color. This color made its way from Africa and Southern Europe. Storm Ophelia caused dust, debris, and tropical air to cloud the sky. The movement of air from the continent also brought in warmer temperatures to the area. The air moved towards the north. It picked up a lot of dust and debris which resulted from forest fires in Portugal and Spain. Ophelia had been spending most of its time around the Atlantic and was categorized as a three hurricane. It was soon know as a post-tropical storm. In the morning of Monday the 16th, storm Ophelia hit the southwest area of Ireland. This storm came after 30 years of The Great Storm of 1987. Nineteen people were killed from The Great Storm. The red skies were first spotted in the west of England and Wales. Simon King, a weather presenter from BBC said, “The dust gets picked up into the air and goes high up into the atmosphere, and that dust has been dragged high up in the atmosphere above the UK.” Why does the sun look red? The reporter also stated that the particles in the air cause blue light to scatter, leaving longer-wavelength red light to shine through. Residents of the area said that the sky reminded them of a scene from Star Wars, while other people referred to The Red Planet. There were many photos taken of the unusual, yet extraordinary red sky and those were posted on social media. https://www.google.com/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4985116/amp/Hurricane-creates-red-sun-skies-England.html https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/london-sky-cloaked-in-strange-orange-glow-in-storm-ophelia-dust-phenomenon-a3659886.html%3famp https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-england-41635906 Worst Hurricanes of 2017Angelic Lopez ‘19 Recently, 2017 has been the worst hurricane season yet with Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey. Millions are in morning right now over their lost of loved ones, close family members and friends. People of all ages and races have been hurt from this horrible catastrophe. A GoFundMe campaign for the victims of the shooting and their families has raised more than 3.7 million since it was started, Monday October 2nd. Residents of Las Vegas and visitors have been lining up to donate plenty of water and snacks for those who were waiting. “Shows of support have been amazing and greatly appreciated,” Clark County said on Via Twitter. There has been a lot of love shown to the family members and close friends of those who were lost in this shooting. There has been candle lightings, and vigils held for the victims of Las Vegas. The Las Vegas shooter was identified as Stephen Craig Paddock, 64 years of age. He lived in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, has been divorced twice, was addicted to gambling. No reason has been found for his actions that had taken place in Las Vegas, Sunday night. Paddock was found dead, believed to have killed himself, in the Mandalay Bay hotel; with 23 firearms fully atomic that reigned over the crowd for about 9 minutes straight. The ATF and FBI are sending the weapons to the FBI crime lab for further inspections. There was also 19 guns found in his home in Mesquite, Nevada. Law enforcement officials found that Paddock had set up cameras both inside and outside of the hotel room that later were used to alert him when the police we're going to arrive to apprehend him. They have also found “several pounds” of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, which is used for attacks utilizing explosives in the past, in Paddock’s car. Investigators are going through his computers and other electronics that they have received from his home in Mesquite, hoping to receive his reason for his actions. His girlfriend, Marilou Danley, was interviewed to try and find a reasoning behind Paddock’s actions of taking 59 people's lives and leaving more than 500 people injured, which was concluding in the worst mass shooting in modern US history. She has said that he was showing no signs that he was going to do something this horrible. Danley said that she was devastated by all of the deaths and injuries from Sunday night. In her statements she said, “It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone”. As her investigation concluded there was no found reasoning that she could give us having reasons behind her boyfriend's actions. There are plenty of investigations and questionings that are going on to find more information about Paddock's decisions Sunday night. As new information is coming in, you can read more about this shooting on the following websites: http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/04/us/marilou-danley-vegas-shooting-paddock/index.html , http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/10/03/555367379/las-vegas-shooting-update-gunman-investigated-as-victims-are-mourned NFL Players Kneel For the National AnthemRylie Begay '21 Players from almost all of the teams in the NFL showed their unity in protest after Donald Trump’s recent comments.Trump found the players who weren’t standing or weren’t on the field disrespectful. He told the NFL owners to fire any player(s) who didn’t stand for the national anthem. Players protested by kneeling or locking arms during the national anthem. Some teams even stayed in the locker rooms, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in an interview with BBC said “We’re not going to play politics. We’re football players, football coaches. We’re not participating in the anthem today. Not to be disrespectful to the anthem, but to remove ourselves from this circumstance. People shouldn’t have to choose. If a guy wants to go about doing his normal business and participate in the anthem, he shouldn’t be forced to choose sides. If a guy needs to do something, he shouldn't be separated from his team who chooses not to. So we’re not participating today. We are going to be 100 percent. We came here to play a football game. That’s our intent.” After a while the protests started to die off, due to Trump’s comments at a political rally. Trump again challenged NFL owners to fire any player who didn’t stand for the national anthem. Trump tweeted “If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag and Country, you would see change take place fast, Fired or Suspended!” None of the amendments state that people HAVE to stand for the national anthem it isn’t disrespectful, but the way we treat the flag: wrapping it around our body as clothing, carrying the flag parallel to the ground, using it to sell products. That is disrespecting the flag. There is no reason to be firing football players for not standing for the anthem. https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dallas-cowboys/cowboys/2017/09/24/least-100-nfl-players-kneel-sit-protest-national-anthem-early-sunday-kickoffs Unity in the CommunitySydney Teran '18Students working together in groups.
