By Zach Wargo '20
For the first week of the Winter Olympics, plenty of history was made for many countries. Throughout the week the two countries North and South Korea had united together to walk into the opening ceremony last Friday. They also banded together to form a women’s and men’s hockey team to compete and to represent both countries. Team USA represents the olympics with the most athletes, as they look to lead in the medal count once again just like they did four years ago. Last Friday showed us how many countries are proud to have athletes represent themselves in this year’s games.
For Team USA however, the first medal came from a 17 year old, a slopestyle snowboarder who won gold, he was Red Gerard, as he described the feeling of winning a medal “Unbelievable”. The next metal for Team USA came from a luger, the first in its history as the country now finally got a silver medal in Luge on the second day of competition. Earlier in the second day Norway swept the podium in Men’s cross country skiing, as they are tied in second in medals with 11. While in speed skating the Netherlands also swept the podium in the 3000m race with them taking gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Later into the week in Half Pipe snowboarding started with 17 year old Chloe Kim qualified for the halfpipe final, alone with three other americans. Chloe Kim who has appeared in her first olympics, showed why she is one of the best in the world, as she scored a 98.25 out of 100, and took her first gold medal, and capturing another metal for Team USA. That same day 31 year old Shawn White was on a quest to take another gold medal for himself and his country. To qualify he scored a 98 to secure another spot in the final for Tuesday. The next day Shawn White won gold with a score of 98.25, as he had to do it on his last run, he had overtaken Japan’s Ayumu Hirano.
With the Winter games Team USA has now won more than 100 gold medals, and with many more chances with Team USA to win medals, and to represent their country is a great thing. Into next week the Jamaican bobsled team, and the Nigerian bobsled are competing and now have a chance to medal, and to make their country proud. Team USA is looking to medal in Women’s hockey, and Men’s hockey and to defeat rival Canada next week in the upcoming matches. Also, the past week Team USA did medal in team figure skating, coming in third, and winning a bronze medal, coming just being Russia, and Canada.
