By Zach Wargo 20'
Last Friday (October 27 ) the District 1-5A Cross Country Meet was held in Farmington, New Mexico to determine who would qualify for the upcoming state meet to be held in Albuquerque one week later. It was by far the most important meet of the year for the six teams in the district (Gallup, Miyamura, Bloomfield, Farmington, Aztec & Kirtland Central) . In the boys race, your Gallup Bengals, who had ran hard all year, took 4th place overall, just missing out on a spot at state. Two boys from Gallup did qualify for state on the 3.1 mile course as Junior Demetri Begay placed 7th overall with a time of 17:51 and Senior Shawn McCaith placed 15th with a time of 18:37. The meet was won by Kirtland Central with a winning score of 26, following Aztec with a score of 48 in 2nd place, and then Miyamura with a 3rd place score of 62.
Later in the afternoon, the ladies took center stage, with a revitalized Lady Bengal team looking to qualify. The Bengals, led by Senior Jessica Ramirez, one of the state's top 10 runners regardless of class, led the way and earned an individual district title with a winning time of 20:25. She will look to place high at state next week in Rio Rancho. The next Bengal runner to come in was Freshmen Celine Nez, who took 8th place overall with a time of 22:26, automatically qualifying for state. Junior Bailey Tom was the third Bengal runner with a time of 22:53 while Sophomore newcomer Vanessa Gorman was the fourth Bengal to finish with a time of 24:53. The final GHS runner to finish was Senior Hunter Livingston who came in at 25:24, good for 29th place. Overall , Kirtland Central took the team district honors with a score of 42 points, following Miyamura with a score of 54 Points, and Gallup coming in 3rd place with a score of 73 points. Other Lady Bengals to participate were 8th grader Cheyenne John, Sophomores Katelyn Thompson and Cearra Williams and Freshman MiKayla McCraith with respectable times.
The State Championship cross country meet takes place at Rio Rancho High school, on November 4th 2017, where our own Bengal cross country team will be competing, and representing our school. GOOD LUCK BENGALS!
