Lady Bengals Pound Jaguars 79-49, Move into the Quarterfinalsby Zach Wargo '20 With March arriving, which also means the basketball season is winding down with State playoff games for the Lady Bengals, less than a week being seeded number three after becoming district runner ups. The first round of state was underway in Gallup and throughout other places in the state, Gallup had to play Capital, a 14 seed who went 14-14 for their season. Gallup was trying to make another run for a state title, and to try and run the table for other teams in class 5A. The Lady Bengals got off a a slow start, which they faced a 4-0 deficit, but soon recovered as they never looked back. For most of the game Capital struggled with on the ball defense and with rotations for the entire game. Once the lady Bengals got going offensively, they never looked back, they got there first lead and only extended it, only by going on a 13-0 run in the middle of the first quarter, putting the score, and ending the quarter 17-8 going into the second quarter. Gallup stayed aggressive on the boards, and were always attacking the basket, putting two of Capitals players in foul trouble early. Gallup opened the second quarter with back-to-back field goals, and then a quick three by Cearra Williams. Most of the second quarter points were lead by Senior’s Ashley Antone, and Leona smith, accounting for Gallup’s 20 of 25 points in the second quarter, Gallup’s lead only extended as they went into halftime with a 42-24 lead. Coming out of halftime Gallup only continued to extend their lead, with capital cutting the game to 19 points in the third quarter, which seemed too much for the Jaguars, as Gallup continued by Leona Smith leading the charge with 5 of Gallup’s 17 points in the third quarter, as two more three’s were made in the same quarter. Gallup would later end the third quarter with a 23 points lead going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Bengals pulled away even more, as Gallup would continue to go up and lead by as much as 32, as they would defeat Capital 79-49. Tuesday night will be one of the biggest game of the season for both the Lady Bengals, but even bigger for cross-town rival the lady Patriots, as they will face off at approximately 8:15 PM, at The Pit, which will always be packed with Bengal, and Patriot fans, in this 10 year rivalry of the schools, the winner will move onto the Semifinals, to play the two seeded Bloomfield or the seven seeded Espanola Valley. Top Scorers: Gallup: Capital: Ashley Antone: 18 Points Ethena Silva: 13 Points Leona Smith: 18 Points Audrey Gonzales: 10 Points Lanae Notah: 11 Points Ashia Smith & Cearra Williams: 9 Points each Freshmen Athlete Interview by Reylena Tsosie '21 I asked him a few questions, like who was his favorite athlete and he chose Bo Jackson, he is a pro football player and baseball player. Bo explained to me that his parents named him after this player. Who inspired you to play sports? He said his father because his dad was in a lot of sports. He felt very happy answering this question and later told me I am happy you asked that. The most important question was if he plans to get a college scholarship with his talent. He told me “no” this question made him very uncomfortable. He told me he doesn’t want to play sports in college so he can focus on his schoolwork so he can become a psychologist. He told me his favorite sport is baseball he plans to play baseball all throughout high school. Bengal Basketball Set to Take State, Boys draw Nine Seed; Girls three SeedBy Zach Wargo '20 After the long and stressful season for both Bengal basketball teams, they have both qualified for state, and competing in the district championship games. After very successful seasons, both Bengal teams finished second in district, and earning their way to state. For the boys team after coming off a span of five games in two weeks, with not much rest, got a nine seed in the tournament, after a major improvement from last year’s 15 seed. This year was much different for the Bengals, as they didn’t have many Senior’s and relied of play of their young players to lead them through games. The Bengals were 8-0 going into the final week of district play, as they suffered three straight losses against Aztec, and both against Kirtland Central. Later in the week they faced there cross-town rival and edged them out in a 41-38 victory to move on to play Kirtland for the third time in a week. This game meant bragging rights as Kirtland had already won the district, and would mean that gallup would have momentum going into State. The Bengals sparked a 14 point comeback after being down 34-50 with less than 5:00 minutes left in the game. Gallup would later win 51-50 in dramatic fashion. Two days later, the Bengals would find out they would be playing St. Pius in Albuquerque, as a nine seed this upcoming Saturday. Earlier in the season Gallup played St.Pius who defeated the Bengals 77-55 in a December 12th match-up. On the girls side, the lady Bengals are seeded number 3, in class 5A, as they are coming off a loss at Bloomfield. The ladies had a successful season, after placing second in their district, and suffering ten losses for the year. The ladies are seeded 3 as they have many statement win’s as they are ranked 16th in the state, and 3rd in class 5A. They got off to a slow start in district, but found a rhythm near the end of the season, to play in the district championship game. The Bengals suffered a loss against Bloomfield, who later got the two seed in the Class 5A bracket. The Girls have showed signs of promise, as they have won close games against top ranked teams, and will look for a deep run in March to make some magic. It will sure be fun to see how this season ends for both Bengal teams. District Championship: Bengals 16-1 run lifts them above KirtlandBy Zach Wargo '20 When times seemed dark for that Gallup Bengals, they had found a spark in the middle of the 4th quarter to comeback and to defeat the Kirtland Central Broncos last Friday night. The Bengals faced a 36-50 climb with less than five minutes left in the game, they managed to put on a 16-1 run in that span, with multiple turnovers, missed shots, and key rebounds towards the end of the game. This would be the third time that the Bengals had played these Broncos, after narrowly losing to them in two close games on February 16th and the 19th, they had to play each other again for the District Championship game. The game provided fans another memory of Bengal basketball, as they were looking to improve their record, and take home bragging rights as District Champs. The excitement of the game had lived up to the hype with a pack crowd, and a wild finish. The first half provided all of that, with a close game at the half, with back and forth baskets being made, it was surely made for a great finish. The Bengals came out of the first half only down by two, and had a real chance to take over the game. With the third quarter starting, Gallup looked to get to a fast start, which they did now, with all momentum shifting to the home crowd, as shots were not going through, and many mistakes were being made during the entire quarter. Gallup only scored six points for the entire quarter, as Kirtland took advantage and outscored the Bengals by 10 points. It had seemed that Gallup was going to lose, as the fourth quarter had started, the struggles continued for Gallup but with five minutes to play the tide had turned. Down only 14, the Bengals looked for momentum, which they once did, with Ronald Perry leading the Bengals, and with Zakarri Fields also leading the Bengals back. The highlight of the game was Ronald Perry hitting a key three with 2 minutes left in the game, and then scoring an easy layup to only put them down by one after a made Kirtland free throw. After a aggressive drive by Perry with 11 seconds left in the game, it was then tipped up towards Quinn Atazhoon, who made the game-winning basket with 8 seconds left in the game, it proved that the Bengals officially came back and got the win, 52-51. The Bengals have qualified for state, and will end up facing the St. Pius Sartans this Saturday night to move on to the state quarterfinals at The Pit, to see if they can make more March magic as they are seeded 9th in Class 5A. The winner would later move on to play the number one seed Kirtland Central Broncos Friday night, as they defeated Farmington. This was the third time that these teams have met this season, as Gallup took the first two meetings. This game was more important as the Bengals were trying to get a home playoff game, and get another chance at Kirtland to become district champions, after losing three straight games in a span of a week. The game started with plenty of intensity, and fast as Gallup went on an 8-2 run to start the game, then Miyamura caught back up with Gallup, keeping it close, the first quarter told us a lot as this semifinal game would mean it would be a dog fight. Bengal Sophomore, Quincy Smith opened up scoring with a three, then later made two free throws to start the run for Gallup. Later Miyamura would later catch up to tie the game 10-10 with a minute left in the first quarter. After a few seconds Gallup would retake the lead as the score would hold 11-10. The second quarter provided fans with a shooting clinic, as six threes were made by both teams, and opened with a back and forth battle on the boards, and inside the paint. The intensity of the game kept up with the crowd, as well as the fans, late in the second quarter, Gallup Junior Tyrell Begay opened up the game with two straight threes, then later Senior Zakarri Fields dropped another three to give gallup an eight point lead late in the quarter. After a Miyamura timeout, Gallup still pushed the ball inside and ended the quarter on a 10-0 run, which gave them to what seemed a comfortable 28-18 lead going into halftime. After halftime the third quarter was much different then the first half, as both teams strayed away from the three-point line, and pushed the ball inside for fouls, free-throws, and challenging layups, and jump shots. Gallup only made two field goals and was 50% from the line, as they had seemed to go ice cold from the three point line, and couldn’t find the ball to go into the basket. As for Miyamura they created a little run at the end of the quarter to cut the deficit to seven, after Presley Nelson for the Patriots scored six of the nine points for the Patriots in the third quarter. By the start of the fourth quarter, tensions were high in the building as Gallup was struggling to find the basket, as they suddenly could not make any three-pointers, and struggled from the foul line late in the game. The fourth quarter started out to be just like the third quarter, as it was a back and forth battle, foul trouble was not a problem for both teams at all either. Gabriel Lee Jr for Miyamura led the scoring with seven points, as he a perfect from the line to bring Miyamura back to cut the lead to three. For Gallup, they played sloppy down the stretch, as every loose ball was a 50/50 ball. Down the stretch Gallup shot only 25% from the free throw line, and missing game clinching free throws at the end of the game. Miyamura had many chances to tie the game, as they missed many shots, and had one key turnover at the end of the game. With 48 seconds left in the game it appeared that Miyamura had the ball, until Gallup called a quick timeout. The call would later be correct, as Gallup soon dribbled out the clock, and forced Miyamura to throw up a heave at the end of the game. Gallup’s next game will be Friday night at Kirtland, for the District Championship. Lead Scorers Gallup Bengals: Miyamura Patriots: Zakarri Fields: 12 Points Gabriel Lee Jr: 14 Points Tyrell Begay: 11 Points Presley Nelson: 14 Points Quincy Smith: 8 points Brandon Vidal: 8 Points 56% Free Throws 100% Free Throws Lebron James & Kevin Durant Speak Out on Latest ShootingBy Zach Wargo '20 Over the past ten days, many comments have been made on the latest shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14th. Many athletes have spoken about the problem on gun control, but the most important voice in sports would be Lebron James, as he is the closest athlete since Muhammad Ali to publicly speak out about the counties problems, as so is Warriors forward Kevin Durant. The shooting affect many schools, and people across the country are protesting to change different gun laws, and abolish assault rifles from being able to be bought. The amount of shootings that have taken place over the past 4 years is outrageous, with innocent kids being shot and lives being taken, it has to stop. The main reason why this shooting struck most people’s hearts was the fact that a minor was able to buy an AR-15 before he could even be allowed to buy alcohol, and the fact that he showed signs of liking violence, and posting on his social media of his holding knives. Over the past week, a FOX news analysis called out the two superstars on making comments towards President Donald Trump, as she publicly told them to “Shut up and Dribble”. Earlier James stated “Trump doesn’t give a F*** about the people”. Later that week, Durant and James both laughed at the comments that the analysis had made, James said later, “The best thing she did was help me create more awareness”. In an interview with USA Today, Kevin Durant said, “It didn’t hit me, it was just another thing that I could ignore,” Durant also said that it was a very ignorant comment, and that my voice is just as important as her voice as that is my right as a United States citizen. The next day Lebron James had posted on his Instagram with the caption and picture saying #Wewillnotshutupanddribble. The picture went viral immediately as Lebron’s voice is very important in sports, and it also shows that he is not backing down from anyone and wants to make a chance as soon as possible so that the amount of shootings decines. Lebron is one of the many important sports figures, and his latest comments just show that he is not afraid to spark a argument, and wants to make a change to our gun laws. Pyeongchang 2018: Kim & White both Secure Golds for Team USABy Zach Wargo '20 For the first week of the Winter Olympics, plenty of history was made for many countries. Throughout the week the two countries North and South Korea had united together to walk into the opening ceremony last Friday. They also banded together to form a women’s and men’s hockey team to compete and to represent both countries. Team USA represents the olympics with the most athletes, as they look to lead in the medal count once again just like they did four years ago. Last Friday showed us how many countries are proud to have athletes represent themselves in this year’s games. For Team USA however, the first medal came from a 17 year old, a slopestyle snowboarder who won gold, he was Red Gerard, as he described the feeling of winning a medal “Unbelievable”. The next metal for Team USA came from a luger, the first in its history as the country now finally got a silver medal in Luge on the second day of competition. Earlier in the second day Norway swept the podium in Men’s cross country skiing, as they are tied in second in medals with 11. Into next week the Jamaican bobsled team, and the Nigerian bobsled are competing and now have a chance to medal, and to make their country proud. Team USA is looking to medal in Women’s hockey, and Men’s hockey and to defeat rival Canada next week in the upcoming matches. Also, the past week Team USA did medal in team figure skating, coming in third, and winning a bronze medal, coming just being Russia, and Canada. NBA All Star Game 2018From The Editor: Super Bowl LIIBy Zach Wargo '20 For two weeks I’ve listened to many people talk about the game, and telling us who would become the Super Bowl Champions. It was mixed, as it seemed most analysts picked Philadelphia to win, and while others picked New England to win once again. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, as it’s one thing I look forward too every Postseason. The game started as I expected to start, quick, and wasn’t surprised by the quick start by Nick Foles. What I did not expect was it to be a track meet, as there was no defense, and many offensive plays were made early in the game. I thought this game could soon get out of hand after a missed field goal by the Patriots in the 1st quarter, thankfully that was not the case, as the Patriots kept on fighting back. We don’t give Tom brady enough credit for what he did on Sunday, with breaking a Postseason record of 505 yards, becoming the 1st NFL player in history to reach 10,000 passing yards, and putting his team on his back trying to get his sixth ring. Only as the two plays he will be remembered for is his dropped pass in the first half, and the strip-sack fumble with 2:10 left in the game. Brady performed his best for most of the season at age 40, as he said after the heartbreaking that he will play for another season. I respect Tom Brady, I don’t see why a lot of people hate him, it's just time to appreciate what’s he's done for the NFL and the game of football, and to look at him as the greatest of all time. I was quickly surprised at how Nick Foles played, he started off strong, and kept it, although he had one interception, his nerves didn’t get the best of him all night. With a game where the Eagles needed to keep scoring, they sure did. The gamble by Philadelphia late in the 1st half is a play that came right out of the College Football Playoff Semifinal game against Georgia, where a wide receiver throws a pass to the quarterback for a touchdown. The play was executed perfectly, as I give Philly a lot of credit for outsmarting the Patriots to keep that confidence on their side. The internet exploded soon after, I thought there should have been more penalties called during the game, as they could have called an Illegal Formation on that 4th & 1, which would have changed the entire outcome of the game. By NFL rule you’re supposed to have seven people on the Line of Scrimmage, as there was only six people. By far I think it is among on the the most gutest play calls in history, as it gave them a 10 points lead going into halftime. The play call “Philly Special” is going to be remembered in NFL history. I realized that at the start of the game during the National Anthem that Super Bowl XLIX hero Malcolm Butler was very emotional, but it didn’t come to me that he wasn’t playing. The reason that Butler did not play a single snap during the biggest game of the season is a disgrace to him. I thought that Butler would have made a huge difference during the entire game, he played 97.6% of snaps during the regular season. I think that Malcolm Butler got screwed, as he is now a free agent this upcoming offseason and will probably not sign with the Patriots again. In my opinion Bill Belichick even out coached himself for the first time, he wanted to prove that he is one of the greatest head coaches in history, but I don’t understand why he did not play his best corner on the biggest stage in front of millions of people. Belichick let his ego get to him, as he had too much pride in his defense, which was one of the seven sins of the bible. The sin of pride in the bible states, “A quality or state of being proud, as being too prideful provides selfishness”. Belichick coached one of the worst games of his career, his defense got embarrassed on national television. On the other side of the field, Eagles head coach Doug Peterson coached the perfect game to defeat the Patriots. He took risks, and put trust in his quarterback on 4th downs and even on two point conversions. He stuck with the run game as it was working very well for his team, and threw the deep ball when the time was right. The 2nd half was very entertaining, as it didn’t have much defense, and plenty of offense. I know football as it not being a track meet, I was waiting for the defense to step up at one point and it sure did. The strip on Tom Brady was not his fault, as his offensive line collapsed on him and let the outside rusher strip him to put the title in the Eagles hands. I thought Brady played an excellent game, but Nick Foles played an even better game with escaping pass rushes, catching a touchdown pass, and leading his team down the field to let Philly re-take the lead. Once again the NFL’s problem all year has been the catch rule and the referee’s. In past Super Bowl’s not many flags were thrown, most or all penalties were false starts, defensive holding, and offside penalties. The Catch rule was the main problems in the NFL, as on a 3rd & 6 in the 3rd quarter, Running Back Corey Clement caught a ball for a Touchdown, but the replay showed that he bobbled the ball, and didn’t have full control of it. They ruled this a Touchdown, as pictures and replay shows it should have been incomplete, and 4th & 6. Another occurrence of this problem was on Zach Ertzs touchdown with 2:20 left in the game, the officials did get this call right, as he took three steps, become a runner, and dived for the plane. The ball appeared to come loose but as a runner he it was called a touchdown. This year’s Super Bowl was entertaining, but as the past few years the NFL’s rating have declined. Around 106.7 million people watched this year’s Super Bowl, the fewest since 2009. I think the Super Bowl was more competitive than last years, it was a track meet since kickoff, and only one major defensive play decided the game. I don’t think this is the best Super Bowl but it is definitely top three. I thought the Super Bowl delivered after an amazing postseason, as we are now onto the offseason, only 6 months away from preseason football. Super Bowl LII: Eagles Upset Patriots In a ThrillerBy Zach Wargo After two weeks of heavy talk about the biggest sporting event of the year, the Super Bowl was finally upon us. The Philadelphia Eagles, coming off their blowout and statement win against the Vikings two weeks earlier, were looking forward to taking down Tom Brady and the Patriots in the Super Bowl. What was at stake would be Brady taking his 6th ring, while Philly would be looking to win their first Super Bowl in its franchise’s history. The Philadelphia Eagles were coming into the game as huge underdogs, which is a role that the have embraced, they entered the game with most of the country on their side, rooting for them to win the big game against the dynasty that is Tom Brady. The Patriots on the other hand showed no signs of being nervous, as they have been here before, for the 10th time in fact. The game started after a great performance of the National anthem, soon the Eagles got the ball first, and capitalized, setting up for a field goal after getting inside New England’s five yard line. While the Patriots watched their defense struggle, Tom Brady went to work, only to do the same as the Eagles did, setting up a short field goal to tie the game 3-3 with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. Philadelphia’s offense did not stop from there, with Nick Foles reading the defense, and finding the open man, New England could not stop Philly on 3rd downs and could not stop the big play. Nick Foles dropped back on a 1st & 10, to launch a 34 yard touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery, only for the rookie kicker to miss the Extra Point, putting more pressure on New England late in the opening quarter. Nick Foles looked unstoppable, as he was splitting the defense, the play calling on point with a mix of run-pass options, play action passes, and short passes mixed in with long runs, it was a sign that the Patriots was in for a long day. Next following drive consisted of most of the same for Tom Brady, quick passes, mixed in with short runs, as they threaten the Eagles with a field goal which was later missed, thanks to a poor snap, and hold by New England. The defense of the Patriots would cause a punt, which would be the only punt of the game, the fewest combined punts in Super Bowl history, Brady had the ball in his hand again, as the same short runs, and short passes turned into large gains. The drive was stumped after two straight incompletions, and getting no points out of another wasted drive. Philadelphia capitalized on the mistake, as they went straight down the field once again, as a 21 yard run by LeGarrette Blount gave Philly a 15-3 lead half way through the 2nd quarter. Tom Brady needed only 84 seconds to give New England a field goal, making it 15-6, Brady was in a rhythm, but so was Nick Foles. Philadelphia made its first and only mistake of the game as a deep thrown ball was tipped and intercepted. Tom Brady and his studded offense, needed only three minutes to go 90 yards to score a touchdown, cutting the score to 3, but again the extra point was missed. With 2:04 left in the 1st half, Philly went down the field again, as the riskiest play of the game was made up with an even better play call, as Nick Foles went into motion and caught a one yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 10 after the extra point, giving them the lead going into halftime. The entire 2nd half was like a pinball machine, no defense, lots of offense, players going down and back on the field, scoring touchdowns, field goals, and converting key 3rd downs in clutch situations. Brady went to Gronk 3 times and scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 3, making the score 22-19. Once again, the defense seemed non existant for New England. Nick Foles played a flawless 2nd half, having them scored another touchdown, only without the catch looking like it was made out of bounds (which later many people said it was) after the ball appeared to be bobbled, and then caught which Corey Clements left foot was out of bounds. The play was reviewed, which would stand, making the game 29-19. The next drive was no different, Brady was flawless once again, only to belt another touchdown pass to Chris Hogan for 26 yards, trying to keep the game in reach, 29-26 with 3:23 left in the 3rd quarter. Nick Foles went to work again, going right down the field, without a stop that New England needed, the rookie kicker helped Philly extend their lead to six after a 42 yard field goal which was the first play of the 4th quarter. After the made field goal, many Super Bowl records were broken last night, as most combined yards, Tom Brady broke the Postseason record with most passing yards, fewest punts, no holding penalties, which is rare in the NFL. To start the 4th quarter of a field goal, as later Tom Brady would put on a show once again, leading his offense right down the field, throwing a touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski, putting them in the lead 33-32 with 9:22 remaining. Nick Foles next drive would define the game, as the Patriots were so close to getting a stop, and the ball back, after converting a 4 & 1, the Eagles were taking time off the clock, and letting Tom Brady watch from the sidelines. Not long after Foles threw a poss to Zach Ertz, scoring a touchdown and having Philly have another lead once again, as the two-point conversion did fail. With a game that consisted with no defense at all, pass rusher Brandon Graham stripped Tom Brady, as the Offensive Line could not hold the pass rush, as the fumble was recovered by Philadelphia with 2:04 left in the game. With a field goal and another stop by the defense, New England needed to go 91 yards in 59 seconds. Tom Brady tried to get his team back, with a failed hail mary that decided the game, letting the Philadelphia Eagles win their first Lombardi in franchise history. After the game, Tom Brady puts the loss on his shoulders, as he said the loss sucks, he also said to a reporter that he will be back for another season. Many questions this offseason will be if Tom Brady does in fact retire, or Rob Gronkowski may retire after many injuries throughout his career, in fact he already is a Hall of Famer, and Tom Brady is already the Greatest of All Time. The offseason will be fun for many football fans, with the draft, combine, and soon preseason will be here once again. For the Eagles their city is torn apart, and just happy to be champions once again, Carson Wentz will hopefully be back by September, and Nick Foles may still be the backup by the preseason. The NFL offseason will be fun to pay attention to as there are many free-agent quarterbacks also. Photo Credit By: AP Photos Super Bowl LII PreviewBy Zach Wargo 20' After two long weeks, the weekend finally belongs to the NFL once again, after the respective title games, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New England Patriots face off this Sunday for the Lombardi Trophy. After a week filled of events for the fans, the players have answered numerous questions from the media, the season will end with the underdog’s facing the dynasty. With the Eagles facing the underdog role all season, and even after losing their starting quarterback, and possible MVP candidate, Carson Wentz, Nick Foles had to try to lead the Eagles to their 3rd Super Bowl appearance in Franchise history. Over the week many questions have been heard if Tom Brady is going to retire soon, on Wednesday he said” No, i don’t see why a lot of people want me to retire so badly” while Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is still questionable and still not able to pass concussion protocol after taking a vicious hit in the AFC title game on January 20th. Photo Credit: NFL.COM What’s At Stake? This super bowl is special, after all it is a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX, which the patriots won, starting their dynasty, after winning three Super Bowl’s in 4 years, since then New England has won two more, and is trying to add to this dynasty, winning a 6th ring for the franchise would be special, as they would be the second team to win six rings, tying the Steelers in NFL History. For the Eagles, it’s a much different story, as they’ve never won a Super Bowl, and haven’t been to the Super Bowl since they had lost to the Patriots 13 years ago. The Eagles have embraced the underdog role all year, with key injuries on the offense and defense. They have played and deserves a shot at trying to dethrone the patriots, as this is like a revenge game, as the country will be watching. A first Super Bowl Title for the city of Philly would mean rejoice, and one of the greatest sports moments in the cities history. Who Has the Advantage? This is no mismatch for either team, as one side has a legendary quarterback, and one of the best head coaches in NFL history, while the other side, holds a second year head coach, a back up quarterback. You’d think the Patriots would have an advantage right? Not so fast, as Nick foles has been flawless this postseason, embracing this week, and this magical super bowl run, the offense which has a running game also, opens up play action and can go for the long ball anytime during the game. The defense has been steller too all season, for only allowing 17 points all postseason. While the Patriots, have plenty of experience, with the defense up and coming, and playing hard towards the end of the season. Tom brady who is going to try and go for his sixth ring, Brady’s offense has a advantage as they have one of the best tight ends in the league. This Super Bowl is special as it will be a heavyweight battle, until the clock strikes zero to determine a champion. Sources: https://www.nfl.com/ http://www.espn.com/ Loss Scholarships? Where Does It All Go?By Zach Wargo '20 In the past you would think that once you get a scholarship to go to college, you can’t lose it right? Well, nowadays students have to keep their grades up, and work hard each day to keep that scholarship. It’s a long and complicated process, as the easiest scholarship to earn would be an academic scholarship. College’s mostly looks at your GPA dating back to 8th grade, which most kids do not realize this, as they also pay close attention to your discipline record, and your ACT/SAT scores in the past. Each college is different, and need requirements for you to apply for that college, for example if you wanted to apply for Duke University, you’d need a ACT score of a 31, or higher, while to attend the University of Arizona, you’d only need a score of 20 or higher. In my opinion, it's much harder to earn a scholarship then lose it, as the hardest to earn would be playing sports. Only 2% of high school athletes make it to the pros, and some don’t even earn a college degree according to the NCAA. The NCAA states that a college education, and a college diploma is far more valuable than going to the pro’s and making a ton of money, as you will have that education and diploma for life. All the money that the NCAA earns from tournament games, national championship games, and ticket sales all goes back to future college students, and scholarships so that the future can be bright and filled with smart, young minds in college. The NCAA makes college, and education very important, so every student can get a degree, and succeed later in life. For example, the University of Arizona offers many majors, and scholarships for people who are interested for attending U of A. They tell you how to earn them, what your requirements are, and how many credits you need to apply, and probably get into the University. One thing I had noticed is that loss scholarships probably go to a more successful, and accomplished student if you cannot maintain your grades, and get poor scores on the ACT/SAT tests. Every college is different, as Harvard, and Dartmouth University are far more different than the University of New Mexico. In a article with USA Today, they had interviewed two college basketball recruits that were on scholarships to play for the University of Kentucky, as they soon later realized that their scholarships were revoked in 2011. The two players had stated that they had no idea what they had done to be revoked of the loss scholarship, and they did not think that it was very fair that there was no reason given why they had loss that scholarship. Athletic Scholarships are very difficult to maintain once schools are interested in you, as one injury, or one bad test score and be the difference of going to a D-I school then a D-II school in a matter of time. Time Magazine also wrote an article on how you would a scholarship, as they gave out five reasons, as of course the top reason was bad grades, or failing classes. Failing classes is one of the most common reasons why enough students do not get an college education. The other top reasons was that students either have a lot of discipline problems, or decide to not follow college rules at all. Plagiarism is also a big no no in college, as it can get you expelled, which happened to two harvard students as they were not allowed to apply to any college for a entire year. Plagiarism also will make it harder to get even into a community college. All lost scholarships probably go to other students, that colleges can trust, or back to the college athletic program it has to offer. Walking Under A Ladder SuperstitionBy Zach Wargo '20 According to an old myth, is that if you do walk under a ladder, it will bring you bad luck. In medieval times, if a person did walk under a ladder, they thought their death would come from hanging. Ladders that were leaned up against something that created a triangle, thought that it was a haunted area. This ancient superstition dates back as far back as ancient Egypt. The Egyptians believed strongly in the pyramids, as if someone walked under a ladder the sacred power of the pyramids would be broken. Today many people have mixed emotions about walking under a ladder, and some just choose to go around the ladder instead of facing the risk of having bad luck. There are ways to undo the curse, as if you hope you see a dog, or you try to go back through the ladder a second time for better luck. The best way of belief is common sense, jarring or shaking the ladder would probably cause a falling object to hit a person. Today most people do not believe in this superstition, they don’t really know the background of it. Walking under a ladder is not the first thing that comes to mind in people. There are many other myths like breaking a mirror, or the illuminati that some other people do believe in. Everyone has different beliefs, and a different opinion towards many different things in our world. Today there are many different superstitions that are good but mostly bad. For example Friday the 13th, opening an umbrella inside, or finding a black cat. All of these superstitions are ancient or old myths that some people still believe in today. There are many ways to reverse bad luck just by walking under a ladder, the most common ways would be making a wish while your walking under a ladder. The second one would be just too walk backwards through the ladder again, or crossing your fingers until you first see a dog. An awkward way of reversing bad luck if to say “Bread and Butter” while your walking under the ladder. This myth came from as far back as Ancient Egypt, as they believed in gods coming down, and you having bad luck for the rest of your life. It’s complicated at how people study these types of superstitions, but it is also very unique how people end up believing in these types of bad luck and good luck superstitions years, and decades later after they are being come up with. Egyptians believed in many gods, and goddesses, which was part of their culture and there way of life. Urban Legend: What is the Illuminati?by Reylena Tsosie '21 What is the illuminati? A question that 65% of Freshmen asked me. 35% do know the history and the background. 45% of freshmen believed in Illuminati and 55% did not. Adam Weishaupt is the founder of illuminati he founded it on May 1, 1776. That year might sound familiar. July 4, 1776 was when the Declaration of Independence was written. Weishaupt is a German philosopher and a professor, when he taught he always said stuff about illuminati. His beliefs were very inspiring to other students that they started to believe it. He gave an assignment out telling what they thought of his theories. The class started to believe him more. He was very serious that he shared his beliefs with Benjamin Franklin. To bad for Weishaupt he was shut down. Benjamin Franklin time was more on the Declaration of Indepence. The most important symbol of the illuminati is the pyramid. What is the Pyramid? Why a Pyramid? Well, we all know that there is a pyramid with an eye on it on the dollar bill. That is a good hint if your not into illuminati. The Pyramid is a representation for “money is not evil.” Some celebrities has been accused of being “Illuminati” but, there is no evidence, it’s just a belief. Beyonce is one of the famous person being accused of illuminati. In one of her famous song “Single ladies” the music video explains their theory. http://illuminaticelebrities.com/ Is Beyonce Illuminati puppet? Illuminati is a belief! Not real, it’s an Urban Legend Last Week's Poll Results!Last week, we asked you who would win the Super Bowl, and 70% of you said that the Patriots will win their 6th ring, while 30% of you voted that the Eagles will upset the Patriots.
AFC Championship: Patriots Comeback Against JaguarsBy Zach Wargo '20 Early into the week, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had injured his hand during a Wednesday practice, which later would provide plenty of drama leading up to Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. The next day it would be determined that this injury was major, as it was a cut on the inside of Tom’s hand. The media was trying to get Brady to budge, as he would just say “We’ll see” towards the media three days before the game. Jacksonville had plenty of confidence, as proving they were legit, after beating the Steelers in a shootout. They were only hoping to dethrone Brady and to go to their first Super Bowl in franchise history. The game started quick, with Tom Brady started 3/3 and led his team down for an early 3-0 lead, as the hand did not seem to affect him at all. Jacksonville soon answered back after their solid defense, going right down the field, as tight end Mercedes Lewis caught a 4 yard touchdown pass from Blake Bortles. The momentum had shifted as the Patriots offense, and defense had seemed stumped, they could move the ball or get a stop which allowed Jacksonville to take a 14-3 lead before the half ended. Tom Brady did what he does best, which giving his team a chance before the half, only taking 55 seconds off the clock to let James White score a touchdown to cut the lead to four. The second half started off quick, with Bortles leading his team down for another field goal, which extended their lead back up too seven points early in the third quarter. The amount of defense in the game suddenly disappeared in the fourth quarter, only with the Patriots down by 10. The play of the game would be a double pass that would have been a 25 yard gain, which later turned into a fumble, only to give Jacksonville the ball back, but the Patriot defense stood strong and gave Brady for ball back. Photo Credit: AP / Winslow Townson Tom Brady leads history in almost every category, from Super Bowl’s too yards, too completions, he added to his legacy as the G.O.A.T for playoff comebacks. Brady led his team down the field for a key touchdown pass, only needing a stop by the defense. When Brady is clutch he is unstoppable. Giving Brady the ball when he needs a score is not a very smart thing to do, as most likely he will beat your team by passing the ball and reading your defense. His most clutch throw came to Danny Amendola who made a clutch sideline catch to secure the win with 2:48 left in the game. The Patriots will face the Eagles, as the Patriots will be looking to secure their 6th Super Bowl title. NFC Championship: Eagles Crush VikingsBy Zach Wargo '20 In a game where people thought it would be much closer, and for a spot in the Super Bowl, the Eagles simply proved that they can be a championship team by creating offense thanks to a good defense. Only by allowing seven points for the entire game. The game started out with an opening drive touchdown by Case Keenum, as that was the only excitement for Vikings fan for the entire game. After the score, the Eagles defense took over by returning a 50 yard interception for a touchdown, which then got the offense to step up to make plays. The Vikings offense got stumped for the rest of the game, after a fumble inside the red zone, turnover on downs, and many missed tackles, with the exciting crowded being behind the Eagles. The game started with a silent crowd after a quick touchdown by the Vikings offense, then the turning point of the game was on a 3rd & 8, which was an interception returned for 50 yards, which helped tie the game 7-7 mid-way through the 1st quarter. With all confidence being on the Eagles side again, the Vikings couldn’t move the ball at all, only to let Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, do anything he wanted to do during the entire game. The second quarter was all Philadelphia, as a 11 yard run gave them the lead, and then after a costly Minnesota fumble, Philly scored again with a 53 yard bomb to Alshon Jeffery to go up 21-7. The 1st half would end 24-7 after a quick field goal by Philly. Photo Credit: Patrick Semansky / AP The second half proved no different, as the VIkings failed to move the ball, and to stop the Eagles. The final blow was with a flea flicker, which ended in another touchdown pass from Nick Foles to Torrey Smith for 48 yards. MInnesoda failed to score any points for the rest of the game, as Philadelphia will be in its first Super Bowl since 2005 against the Patriots. NFL Championship Games PreviewBy Reylena Tsosie '21 NFL Championship The NFC championship game is made up of two NFL teams that have back up quarterbacks first, the Eagles quarterback, Nick Foles, and then Vikings quarterback Case Keenum. They both played together when they were quarterbacks for the Los Angeles Rams. “But like I’ve said, Case’s success doesn’t surprise me because we were together, we prepared together and we were around each other every day.” Nick Foles said in an interview. “I know this is what all you guys predicted back in the day was a Foles against Keenum in the NFC championship. So good job to all you guys that predicted that,” Keenum jokingly said this past Wednesday. On January 21, 2018 is the NFC championship which is when they will square off for a chance to go to Super Bowl LII. In January, and in the playoffs is always a treat for sports fans around the country, so this game will be remembered for many years to come. The final six minutes of the divisional playoff game in Minnesota seemed like it lasted for two hours, the crowded always being electric, loud, deafening, and going into a frenzy after each 3rd down defensive stop, conversation, and every positive offensive play made by either Vikings quarterback Case Keenum, or Vikings kicker Kai Forbath. With only ten seconds left in the game, a Vikings miracle was needed, as a prayer was answered. Vikings quarterback Case Keenum heard the play call on a 3rd & 10, which was Buffalo Right Seven Heaven from his Offensive Coordinator. On their own 39 yard line, three receivers on the right side of the field, only one on the left side of the field. In shotgun formation, dropping back to pass, pressure coming from his right side, fires a pass to the 34 yard line, only to be caught by wide receiver Stefon Diggs. To his surprise, Saints safety Marcus Williams clearly wiffed on a tackle, leading Diggs to an unbelievably 61 yard touchdown with no time left in the game, leading the Vikings home crowed into a frenzy, as a party was just starting in Minnesota. The Vikings will move on to play the Philadelphia Eagles this upcoming Sunday after defeating the Saints 29-24 in arguably one of the most entertaining finishes in NFL Postseason History. The game started with all the momentum on the Vikings side, with their opening drive going eight plays, 55 yards, and ending off the drive with a 14 yard run to Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon, putting them to an early 7-0 lead. The struggles continued for the Saints, with the following drive going nowhere with another punt, and a solid drive leading to a field goal by Kai Forbath, extending their lead to 10-0, late in the 1st quarter. The Saints struggles continued, after a Vikings punt, the next play would be an interception by Andrew Sendejo. The 2nd quarter was no different, with a tired Saints defense on the field once again, the Vikings established the run game putting the ball in Jerick McKinnon’s and Latavius Murray’s hands. The drive took the first 5 minutes of the 2nd quarter, and later a one yard touchdown by Latavius Murray would put the Vikings up 17-0. The Saints would quickly come out with a dominant passing game, and a drive that would take four minutes, only for it to get intercepted again by the dreaded Vikings defense. The quarter would play out to be sloppy, with two missed field goals at the end of the half, giving the Vikings momentum into halftime. The 2nd half was a much different story for the Saints, starting off with a Vikings punt, and then going 80 yards to score a touchdown from a pass from Drew Brees into Michael Thomas’s hands to cut the lead to 10, making it 17-7. The third quarter consisted of only two long drives, which ending the third quarter quickly gave the Saints the ball again thanks to a Case Keenum interception. U.S Bank Stadium slowly grew into a nervous crowed after the interception and quickly the Saints would go right down the field, tearing up the Vikings defense, scoring another touchdown from Drew Brees, into Michael Thomas’s hands putting them only down by three with 13:09 left in the game. Case Keenum led the offense back out again, with a positive drive only to lead them to three points and only taking three minutes off the clock, letting the saints have 10:12 left to take the lead. After two punts by both teams, one of them later was blocked by the help of the backup QB for the Saints, and recovered at the Minnesota 40 yard line. Soon after the blocked punt, the saints needed only four plays to get a touchdown, once again a pass to Alvin Kamara from Drew Brees, giving the Saints a 21-20 lead with 3:01 left in the game. The Stadium being silent for the first time during the game, only putting more pressure on Case Keenum and the offense shoulders. The drive started off with a pass for five yards, then a scramble for 4 yards, putting them at a key 3rd & 1 with 2:00 left in the game. Later the drive would start again with run by Jerick Mckinnon, and then a 24 yard pass to Adam Thielen. The drive would stall, putting the lead and the game in the kicker Kai Forbath’s hands. The kick would be good from 53 yards, energizing the crowd giving the lead back to the Vikings making it 23-21 with 89 seconds left in the game, only with the Saints having one timeout left. Putting the future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees and his offense under pressure in a hostile crowd with 1 timeout. Drew Brees went 6/9 and led the Saints down the field for kicker Wil Lutz quieting the home crowd with a 43 yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the game. Under all circumstances, the Vikings started the drive off with a false start, putting them farther back as they would be needing a miracle. Only a few plays later that would happen, a 61 yard bomb to Diggs, from heartbreak to triumph, giving the Vikings its first NFC Championship appearance since 2009, and breaking Saints fan’s hearts. To win 29-23. The play would be remembered forever in history, known as the Minnesota Miracle, from recent and past postseason heartbreaks. Quarterback Case Keenum mouthed the words “Oh My God’ from his mouth, looking for someone to hug, media members and cameramen scattered across the field, huddling around Stefon Diggs. Stefon Diggs would later tell reporters, “I was at a loss of words, Speechless, biggest moment of my life.” Reactions from across the country, and from radio broadcasts would later be stunned, losing their minds, and speechless after the game. Moments later Case Keenum would lead the Vikings crowd into the SKOL chant, to end off the miracle, giving the city of Minnesota a game to remember for the ages. Four games were played over the weekend, and the winners would move onto the divisional rounds the following week. Their were 12 teams entering their bid to win Super Bowl LII, but only one team would become world champions of the NFL. In the first game of the weekend, which was probably the best game was the Tennessee Titans at the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs had lost five straight home playoff games, which the last quarterback to win a home playoff game was Joe Montana. The Titans who were looking to play spoiler, got off to a very slow start, and suffered miscues early, and the defense looking tired. The Titans were down 21-3 at halftime, with only 30 minutes left in their season. The Titans quickly played defense for the entire 2nd half, limiting the Chiefs defense to zero points, and taking the lead late in the fourth quarter. One of the marquee plays was made by quarterback Marcus Mariota who threw a touchdown pass to himself, the first in postseason history which sparked the Titans offense. The titans would later win 22-21, moving on to play New England Saturday night. In the second game the Falcons would roll past the Rams, 26-13, ending the historic season by the Rams. The Falcons will play the Eagles Saturday evening at 2:20 PM. Photo Source: Tennessee Titans The next day two more games took place, in the first time since 1999, the Bills made it to the playoffs, taking on the Jaguars, in the lowest scoring wild card game in NFL history, the final score was 10-3, Jacksonville won on the games only touchdown, and moving on to play the Steelers on Sunday. The last game of the weekend was the Panthers against the Saints. The Saints took control early with an 80 yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Ted Ginn Jr, to take an 7-0 lead. Later on the Panthers would answer with a field goal as at halftime Saints led 21-9. In the second half the Panthers would put more pressure on Bree’s to pass the ball, as the Panthers outscored the Saints 21-10 in the second half. It wasn’t enough as the last plays of the game ended on multiple sacks, and defensive plays. The Saints will play the Vikings Sunday at 2:45 PM. All eight teams in action this weekend will be looking for spots in their respective conference title games. Georgia pulled off many spectacular plays in the 2nd half to pull off the comeback. The game was the first rose bowl to go into overtime, which meant an instant classic, Georgia would move on to the National Championship for the first time in 35 years. The 2nd game on New Years Day consisted of more defense, Alabama controlled the game from the start with its fast, and powerful defence, only to defeat Clemson to go to its third straight National Title game. Alabama was the heavy favorite to win the National Title with many people not giving Georgia a chance at all against its defence. The game went as not many people expected too, with Alabama’s offense struggling in the first half and the Georgia offense breaking down the opposing team’s defense. Georgia lead at halftime 13-0. Alabama made many adjustments going into halftime. By switching to their inexperienced freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who is from Hawaii, and had not played a snap in college until then. The freshman quicked sparked the offense, with escaping sacks, and making plays with his feet, The freshman quickly made great throws, to make the Bulldog defense second guess the play calling. Photo Source: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs scored an 80 yard touchdown to go back up by 10, with 17 minutes left in the game. Alabama did not let their head down, as they took plenty of time off the clock and were only down by seven with 7 minutes left in the game. Alabama played great defense for the entire second half, only limiting Georgia to seven points the entire half. Alabama took only 4 minutes to score again, tying the game with a seven yard pass to Calvin Ridley to time the game 20-20. With Alabama having the ball again with 3 minutes left, after a defensive stop, they only needed a field goal. Alabama got a few completions down the field to set them up with a 36 yard field goal to win the National Title, which was later missed, as the crowd was stunned and excited with the shanked field goal. In Overtime, Georgia had the ball first, with an incomplete pass play, and a short run play for two yards, on third down Alabama’s defense once again got a key sack, setting up Georgia for a 51 yard field goal, which was good to put Georgia up 23-20 in OT. Alabama only needed two plays to win the game, the freshman quarterback took a disastrous sack which led them to a 2nd and 26, only to win the game on the next play with a 41 yard pass to Devonta Smith. The Champions were Alabama once again, putting head coach Nick Saban tied with Bear Bryant for the most National Titles in the Poll era. The game was the first title game to go into overtime in 15 years. Video games have stopped being made over the past five years, and the question that everyone doesn’t know how to answer. In a recent survey, 52% of blacks are in favor of paying college athletes, while only 15% strongly disagree, and say that they should not get paid while they are in college. While only 27% say that they should just support some college athletes. In recent years, the NCAA has gone through many lawsuits, and have owed millions of dollars to colleges, and people who think that college athletes should be paid. In a article last year, on CBS Sports.com did not state that they could not be able to interview white, and other people. People have debated this topic over the past 10 years, with videogames, and endorsements paying the colleges, instead of the players. There are many pro’s and con’s if the NCAA does decide to pay D-I athletes. One of the positives is that the athletes would be able to support their parents and close family members who are struggling, as they are helping pay for their kid to get an education. If college athletes do get paid, it would probably let them pay for their meals, tuition, and help out their family with bills, and other financial problems they may have. The NCAA has clearly stated where all the money goes, after people and television companies spend millions, and billions of dollars on events like the College Football Playoff, the bowl games, and the NCAA Tournament which airs all 65 college basketball games. The NCAA makes tons of money, and it all goes back to colleges, and their academic programs, food surfaces, and so much more which goes into college sports. For years colleges have been paying other programs to play each other with is around 500k-1 million, most of this happens in college football, which the visitor teams get demolished and suffer a blow out lost, or severe injuries. In 2011 current NCAA president stated that 96% of its revenue is returned to its member schools. All the money that the NCAA clearly makes either goes back to the school's, sports programs, travel, and other endorsements to help keep their college clean and safe. The pros of letting college athletes getting paid would be that athletes may actually stay longer in college, and get a degree and a education. Most college basketball players either go to the NBA after one year, or college football players leave college for the NFL after two years, which makes them not get an education and a degree which would get them a decent job after they are done playing professionally. An importance of a degree in college can welcome you to many well paid jobs, and can help sustain a family after these athletes get out of sports. The difference of a degree helps athletes understand that they will not be playing sports for their entire lifetime. The last positive of letting athletes have money is just giving them what they are worth, as a Division-I athlete is worth about $170,098 per year, while 351 D-I basketball programs take in more than 4.5 million dollars in revenue, which is more than enough to pay them a decent amount of money. D-I athletes go through a lot of labor, with practices lasting up to 3-4 hours, and school, and dealing with finals and away games, it all adds up to stress. A little money wouldn’t hurt right? Well with pro’s there is always con’s. Giving a plethora of money to many 18-21 year olds would mean that they would spend it all in one place, and not put it in a bank account. Most teens would not know how to manage large amounts of money, and spend it on themselves instead of helping out their families. The Herd host Colin Cowherd states, “I don’t think it's a great idea paying to college athletes, most of all 19 year olds will spend it quickly and in a split second! Let's be honest, mostly on weed and kicks! Colin does have a vivid point, as most teens don’t know how to manage money and are too young to understand how to save it.\ College athletes would love to get paid, while they play their favorite sport that they live for, which is the love of the game, well many players have heart warming stories for how they got to college, as they may the first in their family's history to make it to college, which comes from many low class families. Money doesn’t buy everything, but it sure does help a lot of people go a long way, to a new car, job, or even a new house. College athletes would love to buy their parents and family a new ride or home just so they can give back for all the hard work they’d done. Another problem with paying players would mean many questions. Are they getting the right amount? Are they getting paid equally? Where is the money coming from? Which makes this a very conservative topic. Many questions would be answered. As would a star player that is a point guard that averages 14.7 Points, 6.1 rebounds, and 8.7 assists, get more or the same amount of money than the 12th man on Arizona’s men’s basketball team? Would the top talent on each team get bonuses, or would they not get any extra money for taking their team to the Final Four? Many questions would need to be answered for this topic. The NCAA has also been trying to get graduation rates up, as only 67% of D-I athletes will graduate from college. Most of them either go onto the pros, or get drafted by a team. 67% is a low number for athletes, as they should be students first, and athletes second, as they will need a job after they are done playing sports. Most athletes who go to colleges rarely have a meal to eat, or to buy a decent meal since they probably don’t have a job, and need to pay tuition, and other fees, so they can stay in college. There is a lot of reasons why and why not they should and shouldn’t be paid. Another problem is that some colleges don’t have enough money to pay the athletes, as they don’t make it to the bowl games or the annual tournament. The last main problem is will the athletes continue going to class? They will probably slack off and ditch class due to the amount of money they have. They won’t be as competitive as they play, and will halfass everything that people throw at them. If they do that, then there likelihood of making it to the pro’s takes a jurassic downfall. Another main problem is very few sports make a lot of money, like swimming and fencing does not make as much money as basketball and football. In my opinion, college athletes should not be paid at all, as it will be a distraction around school, and will get them in more trouble. They will be buying drugs, dope, and throw more parties as the will want to get cocky with their own money. I don’t think it's right, and it does not give them a real college experience. It make make some colleges go in debt, and there will be several complaints with the process of how they equally pay every single athlete. The amount of money that the NCAA brings in each year is enough to pay the athletes, an equal amount is the real problem, as the NCAA will have to figure out how to pay each athlete with a fair amount of money each week or month. They will have to discuss what is right and what is wrong to do if they pass a bill to pay college athletes. If one thing that is not going to happen is athletes getting paid as much as the professionals do, which would put the NCAA in debt, and would let college athletes fail out of school, making graduation rates drop even more. College Basketball has the biggest problem with keeping its athletes in school, with basketball players being the most impatient with getting to the NBA, and with them wanting to make money right away. Most basketball players nowadays do not want to stay in school, and the NBA needs to change the rule to where college players need to stay in school for at least 2 years to develop, and to get a education. The NCAA has had major problems with its scandals with money, and harassments, recently, Louisville had fired its hall of fame coach Rick Pitino after him bribing recruits with Adidas, a top three sports company. The NCAA is a corrupted company, and it has been for the past 15 years. Paying every college athlete would make more scandals, and more trouble for colleges, coaches, its players, and the NCAA. And she said, “ He lost control of himself and yanked me into the wall, busting my jaw, my face is swollen and a little bit bruised.” WITNESS STORY: A witness was staying at the apartment when this incident had occurred and he is one of Elliott’s friend and he did not see any fight or injury on her. NFL: Thompson had taken photos of herself and the bruises on her. She sent them to her aunt and a note that was “Abusive” What Elliott thinks: Elliott hasn’t said anything to anyone about the trial. He hasn’t had any interviews with sports organizations since his suspension and his trial. He left the country to clear his head. Trial: Multiple sources had alleged that Mr. Elliott had physically attacked Ms. Tiffany Thompson. What are theses sources? The sources included Tiffany herself and the NFL.Thompson had filed police reports, July 2016. He wasn’t charged with that crime. The NFL had conducted an investigation for over a year. The NFL, suspended Elliott. They had different opinions compared to the legal system. Roger Goodell thought that a six game suspension was necessary for the start of the 2017 season. The NFLPA had filed a lawsuit against the NFL, it wasn’t because they haven’t found Elliott guilty it was because they haven’t found him guilty and they believed it wasn’t fair. Judge Amos Mazzant a judge in the United States district court. In early, September the judge granted that Elliott play football. Tiffany Thompson accused Elliott for domestic violence back from when he was in college at Ohio State University in early 2016. If he is found guilty this will be the third time in three months that the NFL has found Elliott guilty of domestic violence. Elliott was supposed to be suspended for the first six games of the 2017 season. With an interview with Erin Andrews she asked him why he didn’t take the first six games suspension. He said that’s not who he is. His suspension was supposed to begin November 5th but, a federal court in New York blocked his suspension for the fourth time this year, and he ended up playing against the Kansas City Chiefs. Luckily Elliott and the Cowboys won 28-17. During that game he made a go ahead touchdown. Elliott’s suspension started November 12th and did miss the next six games on the Cowboys schedule, starting against the Atlanta Falcons. He was suspended for six games. He will be playing against the Seahawks on Christmas Eve. Early present for Elliott Ezekiel Elliott will be playing against the Seahawks on Christmas Eve. What will happen next?: There is a lot of question for the Dallas Cowboys. Will Zeke be ready for football? Will this suspension impact the team including himself? How well did Elliott perform? ESPN had thought a lot of these questions, according to the Dallas Cowboys website, he is ready he has been lifting weights and working out throughout his suspension. Elliott is in better shape then the rest of the team. He is going to perform better like, he never missed a practice. Everyone is excited for Christmas Eve and counting down the days for Elliott to return to the game that he loves. Elliott’s suspension has impacted the team, especially Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Prescott is excited for Zeke’s return. ELLIOTTS BACK: He is back and will he better than ever? After, his six game suspension he is back and hungry for the brutal world of Football. The team is excited, "He was not going to come back on the flight with us. He went to New York. That was the last time I spoke to him. The message I share with him all along is control what you can control." Jason Garrett had explained to Elliott. The question is not for Elliott it’s for you, Are you ready for Elliott? https://www.sbnation.com/2017/8/29/16151642/ezekiel-elliott-timeline-domestic-violence-police-report-nfl-suspension-appeal https://www.maxim.com/sports/ezekiel-elliott-girlfriend-sex-teammate-2017-9 https://www.sbnation.com/2017/11/19/16666714/ezekiel-elliott-nfl-suspension-cowboys-ex http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/news/ezekiel-elliott-dallas-cowboys-suspension-appeal-stats-jason-garrett-chiefs/9jdebhh4s6wy1a00aj1au7456 https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjptb-__53YAhWIyoMKHWntCO4QFggpMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsportsday.dallasnews.com%2Fdallas-cowboys%2Fcowboys%2F2017%2F09%2F01%2Fezekiel-elliott-accuser-tiffany-thompson-believe-got-pregnant-purpose&usg=AOvVaw0lJV6zIxOfxGMHeM8OYTMW https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi43-rQ_53YAhXMqYMKHX_NDjQQFggpMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.12up.com%2Fposts%2F5386154-tmz-releases-graphic-injury-photos-of-ezekiel-elliott-s-alleged-victim&usg=AOvVaw1RL5utMwWXmipDfxYdLnUh https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiDitXj_53YAhUo6YMKHSWYCM4QFggyMAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsportsday.dallasnews.com%2Fdallas-cowboys%2Fcowboys%2F2017%2F11%2F09%2Feverything-need-know-nfls-investigation-cowboys-rb-ezekiel-elliott-assault-allegations&usg=AOvVaw3tL2rvETV8LcbfCcuxQZry https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=8&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiDitXj_53YAhUo6YMKHSWYCM4QtwIIVDAH&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DnsRKXuMvAUs&usg=AOvVaw3pZqvkQ3-1BJi3Ej47rZEw Overall Health and Concussions in Our AthletesBy Zach Wargo 20' With the NFL and many star athletes in sports getting injured this season, it is affect the way how sports is changing, and the importance of knowing the risks of getting multiple concussions, injuries, and reminding us that we cannot play sports forever. With recent season ending injuries from Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, Texans Quarterback Deshawn Watson, Bears tight end Zach Miller, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, over the course of the long 17 week NFL season, even including Gallup High Senior, Journey Gillson involved in a hard fall earlier this month during a basketball game, as not to forget Boston’s center Gordon Hayward suffering a gruesome, and season ending injury on opening night. What is CTE? CTE is only a disease that can be recognized when the person has passed, the brain disease slowly spreads throughout the brain, as it kills brain cells. Concussions are the main cause of this disease, as multiple concussions can cause memory loss, and dizziness with many other symptoms. The cause of CTE is due to many and multiple hits to the head. CTE has been found in football players, boxers, hockey players, soccer players, and even our military veterans. Long-Term Health Over the past 15 years, CTE has taken many star and hall of fame football players, the first coming in 2002, Mike Webster, a star center for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970’s. The deaths of these football players have increased slowly, as most recently former New England Patriots Tight End Aaron Hernandez suffered from stage 4 CTE, the worst ever found in a human brain. After a football player retires, they will most likely suffer from headaches, dizziness, short-term memory, suicidal thoughts, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, and many other symptoms from this brain disease. Football and Concussions Earlier this NFL season in week 4, Green Bay Packers Wide receiver Devante Adams suffered a Concussion in the 3rd quarter from Chicago Linebacker Danny Trevathan, only to knock him out, and his mouth piece. The Crowded was filled with boo’s and filled with shock as Devante Adams was not moving for five minutes. In a Week 13 matchup Steelers Linebacker Ryan Shazier went for a tackle, only to be left on the field not being able to get up or move his legs. He would later be carried off by a stretcher, putting him on season ending IR as he needed back surgery, putting his career in jeopardy. Concussions have been a problem in the NFL for multiple years, with lawsuits, and more former players being examined for CTE. A recent and surprising study found that CTE was found in 99% of deceased NFL players brains, which examined 110 out of 111 people. This study caused young football players to retire and go into another job field. CTE is a major problem in football, with young kids being exposed to concussions when their brain is still developing. The NFL has tried many things to prevent concussions, which is a work in progress at this moment. In 2015 a Will Smith movie called “Concussion” featured Mike Webster, and Junior Seau suffering from CTE, and how deadly the effect can be on former players. The movie showed how CTE develops into the brain, and how it can affect players after they retire. Many of Gallup’s varsity runners trained after state, and went to Casa Grande, Arizona, on November 18th, and finished the season at Mt Sac, on December 2nd. More than 1000 runners competed in both competitions, as Gallup’s own represented their school and city. The runners from Gallup were Seniors, Hunter Livingston, Jessica Ramirez, Wacey Begay, Brandon James, Ilijah Lester, and Taylor Benally Junior, Demetri Begay. Sophomore, Katelyn Thompson, Cameron Benally and Freshmen, Celine Nez. On November 18th, nine runners from Gallup High competed at Nike Cross Southwest Regionals, in Casa Grande, Arizona. The race was one of eight Regional competitions across the country. The boys medium school race had 259 runners, with seven from Gallup. First runner for Gallup was Junior Demetri Begay with a time of 16:57, then followed Senior Shawn Mccraith who ran a 18:21, then Brandon James with a time of 18:37, followed by Ilijah Lester with a time of 19:00, then Wacey Begay with a time of 19:13. Junior Cameron Benally came in next with a time of 19:43, and Taylor Benally with a time of 24:45. In the girls Medium school race contained 252 runners, including two of our own. Senior and State placer Jessica Ramirez came in 12th place with a time of 18:45, while Freshmen Celine Nez ran a personal best with a time of 20:47. Two weeks later, after Thanksgiving break, eight Gallup runners traveled west to Mt. Sac in California for Foot Locker West Regionals. This race was much harder and had many more runners than Nike Regionals with big hills and a tougher terrain. For the boys Junior, Demetri Begay came in 82nd, with a time of 18:15 out of 346 runners in the Junior race. To cap off the tournament, would be Gallup and Bel Air, a team from Texas that no one really knew much about. Bel Air had taken an early 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game, then Gallup ended the 1st quarter with a 22-14 run, only being down by two at the end of the 1st quarter. Early in the second quarter the lady Bengals would get off to a fast start again, taking their first lead and maintaining it, going 6/7 from the free throw line, and knocking down two 3’s late in the 1st half. Senior Journey Gillson would later exit the game suffering a concussion after taking a hard foul late in the second half. Bel Air and Gallup were both in foul trouble to start the 2nd half with the score being 44-39. The start of the second half was a change of tempo, with less fouls being called on both sides and a rare zero free throws attempted made the 3rd quarter intense, quick, and was filled with energy. The third quarter consisted of two three pointers, and plenty of field goals, with the score being 55-52 going into the 4th quarter. Bel Air started the 4th quarter quickly, with Gallup without Journey Gillison and McKleigh Begaye, they showed signs of fatigue. Gallup only shot ⅙ from the free throw line, and got outscored 17-8 in the 4th quarter, losing 69-63. The Lady Bengals suffered their first lost of the season, going 4-1, entering the Artesia Tournament, December 7-9.
