What's Cooking in Culinary?: Vanilla Coconut Macaroon Cookies

Overall, the process of making these macaroons was about 40 minutes. 20 minutes preparing the food and the baking took 20 to 25 minutes to cook. The students really enjoyed making this recipe because it was a delicious thing to eat and they say it was worth the wait. A little known fact about macaroon cookies was that they were simple cookies made of almond powder, sugar and egg whites. They first original came from Italy, introduced by the chef of Catherine de Medicis (the queen of France) in 1553. The term “macaroon” has the same origin as the word “macaroni” both meaning “fine dough”.
Literary Review: Faking Faith

As a couple of months fly by, Dylan and her boyfriend Blake were going strong, until he convinces her to do something she normally wouldn’t do. After letting everybody know what she had done, Blake breaks up with Dylan in the most horrible way possible. Dylan is left to deal with the consequences and humiliation.
In the end she loses her best friends, the trust of her parents and is all on her own. For awhile she isolates herself from everybody and spends most of her time reading online blogs; After getting tired of doing the same thing Dylan is inspired by a Christian blogger named Abigail she starts her own blog. Dylan and Abigail start an online friendship and finally decide that Dylan should go to visit Abigail and her family. Not knowing much about each other Abi has no idea that Dylan is not actually a Christian, but eventually finds out the truth about Dylan and it puts a lot of stress on their friendship. Upon returning home and unsure about how things will turn out Dylan is surprised that her mom is spending time with her and not at work. Well, let’s just say that things were almost back to normal for Dylan when she returned home.
I wasn’t so sure how I would like about this book or what I would think about it, but I have to say that it really did interested me. “Faking Faith” really did surprise me because of how honest it was. So I do not have anything bad to say about it. If you like to read but you cannot find a good book that interests you, go to the library and check out “Faking Faith” by Josie Bloss.
Artist Appreciation: Noah Begay

Guess what Ambush! Readers? There is a new edition to the Arts & Culture section; We’d like to introduce our newest column, “Artist Appreciation.” It is here that we publicly show off the talented students here at Gallup High. The Gallup High artists consist of creative minds, and a variety of styles. Our first interviewee is eleventh grader, Noah Begay. Artist are here to share their experiences of discovering who they are. Do you know who you are?
Question: When did you first know you wanted to be an artist?
Begay: I always knew I wanted to be an artist, I think that I had a lot of creativity at a young age and it just stuck. When we would do arts and crafts in school, I always enjoyed it way more than the other kids did. I also grew up with art supplies within an arm’s reach. My father liked to draw and always had sketchbooks, paint, and pastels, this came handy. It wasn’t long before I learned to use these materials to express myself. This would later set the stage for my dreams of becoming a makeup artist.
Question: What kind of art do you primarily work on?
Begay: I don’t like to limit myself when it comes to art, because I find creativity in everything. By that I mean I don’t always like to just paint on a canvas or draw in a sketch-book. Sometimes I like to sew or even write and I consider that art. It just depends on how people seem to interpret what it is that you’ve created.
Question: Is there a specific style of art you do? Why?
Begay: Well in the instances when I do plan on drawing or painting, I have a specific style I like to work in, and that is pop art. Roy Lichtenstein was a huge inspiration to me and is the reason why I began to work in this style in the first place. The over exaggerated features and dramatic scenarios were what intrigued me the most. However, I do add my own twist to whatever it is I am working on.
Question: What inspires you? Why?
Begay: Old Hollywood glamour, popular culture, and my own feelings are what inspire me. The style from the 1940’s through the 1960’s is something that will continue to amaze me. There is a vintage beauty that I always try to incorporate into my art because of this. Popular culture is also a big part of what I create. From movies to music and singers to actors I draw whatever makes me happy. As I said before, I use art to express myself. Art can be therapeutic and a good stress reliever, it helps to express emotions you can’t explain through words.
Question: What is your favorite medium to work on as an artist?
Begay: I like to work with all types of materials, but if I had to choose, it would be a regular old sketchbook and some pens and pencils. The reason I say this is because sometimes when you’re on the go or just have a sudden “aha” moment it’s really easy to forget your ideas in a matter of seconds. So if you always have a sketchbook on hand you can quickly jot down the idea or even sketch it out. I also like to use a sketchbook because sometimes I just don’t feel like painting or using another form of media, so I use a sketchbook instead.
Restaurant Review: Taco Bell

It’s a nice taco place to eat at. Some people might have their own favorite place to eat tacos, like at home or at Del-Taco or a local restaurant. But some people like Taco Bell.
If it’s a night out with some friends, then Taco Bell is the place to be. They don’t just have tacos; you have different varieties of food like nachos, burritos, or cinnamon twists.
Taco Bell is the place to be most likely if it's a really hot day and there's nothing cold to drink at home. Then you can head over to Taco Bell to grab yourself a nice cold large drink or one of those freezies. But a downside to Taco Bell is some items costing more than they should. Like having a burrito that would cost 2 or more dollars. That’s not a good price. Some people might pay more or pay less. It really depends on what they want and what they get. Like a bean burrito might cost up to a dollar or less. Like those new dollar burritos like burrito supreme or a regular bean burrito. But in my point of view, they are both good. You also have those $5 boxes to try. For example, that Double Chalupa box. It comes with two tacos, a burrito and the new double chalupa. Its very good and also a good price for a box that comes with 4 items. It would be good with a nice large drink. Taco Bell might have some good deals as well.
So if you're out and about with some friends, and you’re hungry, and you just have 10 dollars, stop over at Taco Bell and buy yourself some burritos, tacos or the $5 box.

Restaurant Review: Fried Ice Cream at the Chili Factory

This treat is great for anyone who loves coconut or has a sweet tooth. The setting of the service got crowded at times, but was mainly mild, and the employees are friendly with a fast service. As a rating I would give this dessert a 4/5 leaving, one out mainly because the treat is prepackaged. Despite the prepackaging, the fried ice cream treat at the Chili Factory is a nice treat for coconut lovers and those with a sweet tooth.
The Sophomore That Took Gold at SkillsUSA

Joel has amazing support from his parents that pushes him to better himself. Rivera got into State because of Mrs. Jones, the instructor of the Culinary Arts class here at Gallup High. Mrs. Jones had asked Rivera if he wanted to go to a culinary skill competition in Albuquerque and he had said yes. Joel trained for a mere 2 weeks instead of 4 months for this skill competition. It’s amazing how a person who is new and offers little experience can manage to win state. He had competed with 50 states including Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Joel prepared his food by whatever takes the most time because time is everything in a competition. For his finale dish he had made a sauted chicken with a parmesan sauce, parmesan orzo pasta, then a pho soup and a garden salad. Joel felt like he couldn’t win state at all because it was barely his second year and he felt he didn’t have that much experience compared to the others, but with that little experience he had he was able to come up on top. His overall experience was great because he met a lot of new people and it had many great opportunities along the way. Joel had stated, “I would do it again in a heartbeat.”
