Street Art at the Class Games!by Meche Williams '19 On tuesday September 12, 2017, there was class games and the activity was street art painting held right in front of Gallup High School on the road, it started at 5:00 pm. All four class (seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshman) compete against one another for the best street art that represents their class and includes the 50s theme. They had a total of 2 hours to get it done only using the four colors given to them, which are orange, white, black, and their class color. Freshman class of 2021 (Green) Question: How do you feel about your class street painting? And which one do you think is best out of all 4 classes? Alizay Chavez: Class street painting was very fun. I believe that it went very well for our first time doing it. Out of all the classes I think that the seniors had the best painting. Sophomore class of 2020 (Yellow) Junior class of 2019 (Red) Question: How do you feel about your class street painting? And which one do you think is best out of all 4 classes? Prina Patel: Despite everyone having great street paintings, juniors really had the best. Our class worked together and completed the task efficiently, and the painting was splendid. Christopher Mazon: Our class street painting came out better than everyone expected. The class worked together as a team to complete the task. I'm really proud of what we accomplished. All of the classes had great street paintings this year, but I'd have to say my favorite is the juniors. Senior class of 2018 (Blue) Question: How do you feel about your class street painting? And which one do you think is best out of all 4 classes? Anonymous: Our street painting could of been way better. We had a plan but as people got excited they stopped doing what made sense. The best class painting was probably from the sophomores. They put a record track into theirs and it looked sick! Tyler Gonzales: Our Senior class painting was overall a success we did end up having some flaws with the paint because it didn't come out as expected, but yet it was a very fun experience, especially for my last street painting in high school. I say the senior class was and is the best out all four classes because the senior class has a better layout in their area of painting as well as an outstanding drawing to go along with our 50s theme. Restaurant Review: Breakfast Burrito at Earl's Family Restaurantby Sage Addington '18
If you’re looking for a good breakfast with some great chili, the breakfast burrito at Earl’s can fill up anybody on a reasonable price. Go on and give it a try! Artist Appreciation: Jakyra Johnsonby Shawn McCraith '18 Jakyra Johnson is a wonderful and zany young lady that draws/paints whatever she chooses. She is a senior this year and not a whole lot of students have seen her artwork. Her works are filled with so much color that it feels like you are walking the Rainbow Road from Mario Kart. Creating and producing art is a natural skill she has and it should be showcased to all who like amazing art. In this interview she gives insight on how long or what takes place when she flexes her creative abilities. Question: How long does it take to complete a project and what is your favorite media? Johnson: It really depends on what I am designing. It also depends on what type of materials I’m using. Usually I typically spend a month on each project to perfect it. My favorite medias are oil pastels on canvas. Oil pastels are my favorite and for me, easier to work with. Question: How will art play a role in your future? Johnson: Well, I always dreamed of being a surgeon or a pediatric doctor. Art doesn’t really fit in with what I want to do, but I could do volunteer work for many places. I could paint murals for like the hospital I work at. Art does have a big impact in my life though, it makes me feel like me and my dad will always be together because my dad’s a really good artist. This is one of the many reasons why we connect. Question: Which colors do you experiment with the most? Johnson: The cool colors are what I experiment with the most. I think they’re such delicate pigments. I like to lighten and darken them and mix them together to create “new” colors. Question: What are the expenses of an artist that likes to express themselves all the time? Johnson: It’s a nightmare. I mean it’s not too bad, unless you’re my dad or with my dad. My dad likes to get me the “good stuff” and that could mean a lot of money signs, but he knows I love art as much as he does. Question: How do you express yourself through art? Johnson: I guess you could say I express myself with the pigments I use. Most of my artwork is bright. I’m a happy person, so I think using bright colors really tell who I am. I express myself with every piece I make. Question: What helps the thought process of creating something beautiful and meaningful to you? Johnson: I really refer to my memories and family. Both of which I hold dearly to my heart. They have a big influence on my art. Question: Do your emotions affect the way your art is created? Johnson: I wouldn’t think my emotions affect my art. If I set myself to create such a perfect piece, then I will do so and make sure it’s as perfect as can be. What really affects my art, is lack of concentration. I have to be focused to work on my art or else I will never get it done. So much can be done, but in the end it is all worth it and Jakyra has informed us so. Art is not easy and is definitely not as appreciated as much as it should, but it is terrific. She has many ties with her dad and draws inspiration from family which is what almost anyone would do. WEEKLY POLLLast Week's Poll Results!Last week we at Ambush! asked our readers what is their favorite media to work in. 50% of poll takers said they prefer paint, 37% said pens/pencils, and the other 13% said colored pencils.

Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy 2by Shawn McCraith '18 Dancing is a big part of the film along with cracking jokes and hilarious tomfoolery. Love has a bigger role in this film than the first and the origins of Peter Quill’s parents is a chunk of where the feelings is derived. Dave Bautista and Vin Diesel deliver excellent roles in their characters Drax the Destroyer and Baby Groot. Michael Rooker’s role is more clear and prominent in this feature. Ego and Mantis are two new characters that add comedic value to the story so they help make the movie more enjoyable for everyone. The action in the movie is explosive and a visual joyride filled with colors that adds to the whole color theme of the film. This movie is an amazing visual spectacle, and hilarious blockbuster that no one can hate Restaurant Review: El Metateby Sage Addington '18
If you haven’t tried El Metate yet I would definitely give it a try. I only tried two dishes, but from what I experience the restaurant has great atmosphere, great service, and great food. WEEKLY POLLLast Week's Poll!Last week we asked Ambush! Poll takers if they thought the stereotype of drama being ignored by the school is accurate; 100% of poll takers said yes.
Movie Review: Alien Covenantby Rocco Addington '20
The movie also has some beautiful yet horrifying symbolism. As amazing as the symbolism is, it’s still a horror movie, though there are some silly moments the film makers tried to play off as scary. I don’t see the film as scary more than grim. Just to be clear, this movie is not for the faint of heart. Towards the end you’ll start to get the real tone and message of the movie (only when you have gotten past the part where this is supposed to be a horror movie) and you’ll actually start to enjoy the movie… That is if you can ignore the minor plot holes to enjoy all the gore, symbolism, horror and stunning visuals. The main problem in this film lies in the pacing and predictable “horror movie traps.” Drama Club's Radical Raffle!by Sage Addington '18 Drama Club is holding a fundraiser that all students and staff are encouraged to participate in. The club is wanting to go on a trip in February so they are going all out with this back to school raffle. The prize basket will include school supplies such as colored pencils, glue sticks, and best of all… A LAPTOP! That’s right, there will be a small laptop in the prize basket for the winner of the raffle. Raffle tickets will go on sale September 7th and last till September 21st. Raffle tickets are $5 and can be purchased in B-110 from Ms. Edelson. Restaurant Review: Frybread Pudding at Chei's Grillby Christina Maldonado '19
I looked upon what was given to me, it was an evenly cut rectangular shape with a delightful cloud of vanilla ice cream on top. The flavors began to create a large combination with tasteful and produce well constructed dessert. The frybread was not greasy, but brought out tasteful flavors with the dried cranberries and cinnamon, but the milk and ice cream gave it an extra moist texture. I would rate this dessert a 4 out of 5 paws; in my opinion, the title was slightly misleading, when I think of pudding, I naturally think of something creamy, but pudding can also be defined as a sweet or savory steamed dish made with flour. I was informed that this dish is steamed, and made out of flour(the fry bread) so it would be considered pudding. Also, I was told that there were chocolate chips in the dessert, so I was expecting a powerful hit of chocolate, but I was still satisfied with the results. If you want to try an unforeseen dessert, I highly recommend that you reach your sufficient dessert needs at Cheii’s Restaurant. Fry bread Pudding Recipe: 1 tray of fresh eggs 4 cups of milk 2 cups of sugar 1/4th cup of cinnamon 1 cup of chocolate chip 1 cup of dry cranberries 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract 5 frybread (½ inch dice) Combine all ingredients in a bowl to mix and whisk, then pour ingredients into a pan, and steam for 30 minutes. When it is done, place it in the oven for 10 minutes until brown. (The dessert is not cooked individually but as a batch). The Beats in Band: Interview with Jacob Ashley-Martinezby Danica Daniels '20 Are there things you’ve wondered about band? Do you ever wonder what type of music they play? Well I sat down to do a virtual interview with one of the section leaders, Jacob Ashley-Martinez. Currently, the only events band has are the home football games, but they do have contests coming up later on in the season. As for the music, the two main songs that they are focusing on are “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce, “Smells like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, and they also play “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes, and “Thrift Shop” by Maclemore. The song that has been the most difficult for the band is the Na Na song, but they continue to work and improve on it. When asked how the band is doing performance wise Jacob stated, ‘’I am very proud to say that we as a band have improved within this school year. From last year to now we have made very good progress with our playing and we have been told of our improvement by the school’s staff.” In Jacob’s opinion the band is okay where it is at and the only thing he would want to change is having the entire band practice together instead of just the drum line. As for Martinez, his role as a section leader for the drum line is to keep the section in check and practice their music so they can memorize it. He chose the drums because he’s always liked them since he was little. Martinez is proud that he made the decision to be apart of the band for the memories it will give him and says he is happy that he fulfilled his dreams of being a drummer. Although he has a busy future planned for himself, Jacob still hopes to play the drums in the future. Good luck to Jacob and the rest of the band in the rest of their season!! Artist Appreciation: Angelena Benallyby Derek Curley '19
Question: What art do you primarily work on? Benally: I primarily work on cartoons and realistic drawings. I love cartoons as well as realistic drawing because I want to show my creativity in them to others. Question: Where do you get your inspiration and ideas from? Benally: I as a cartoonist get my inspiration and ideas from movies, games and the things I love. Those things are where I get my inspiration from as well as my imagination. Question: What is your backstory of becoming an artist? Benally: It was when knowing that my family are all artistic that I wanted to be the same. Also when I was young I loved to watch cartoons and games it’s what I wanted to draw As for my personal favorite cartoon, it would be Courage the Cowardly Dog which inspired me to draw. Question: Would you say that your personality is reflected in your work? Benally: Yes, I do think that my personality does reflect in my work because I have a funny and happy personality. I was shy at expressing my feelings to people until I started drawing and it reflected my personality to people who admired my work. In my short interview with Benally, I have learned many new things about her. I have learned that she gets her inspiration from many different things. I learned that her favorite show would have to be Courage the Cowardly Dog and that her happy personality shows in her work. One big thing I learned about Benally is that she shows her emotions and puts in a lot of work in her drawings. So for this weeks artist appreciation, I have proudly presented Angelena Benally, a Gallup High School freshman and proud part of the class of 2021. Equity, Discouragement in Dramaby Sage Addington '18 It’s a common stereotype that drama club is brushed a side, but stereotypes exist for a reason. With the new school year here, there’s been a few noticeable differences around the school. Locks on bathroom doors have been installed and so have hand sanitizer dispensers in each classroom, but that’s not all. Classes such as weight lifting have gotten upgrades and Culinary has been promised new stoves, but what about Drama? While talking to drama director Nona Edelson, Edelson said, “We’re like the step-children,” implying that athletes are the biological children. “We’re a group of artists who aren’t valued. We aren’t valued school wide.” Why such the strong claim? As far as getting new equipment or repairs to the auditorium, it’s basically been a solid “maybe.” In May Edelson was asked if any repairs were needed in the school’s auditorium and she replied that the stage curtain is torn, the sound system is antiquated, and the stage lights need to be worked on. In the final month of the 2016-17 school year, the stage lights were put at risk when a leak developed in the ceiling right beside them. This year the curtain is still torn, the sound system is still antiquated, and it’s unknown if the leak around the stage lights was ever fixed. Along with having to wait for repairs and updates the the auditorium, Edelson commented that “We [the drama club] did not have one single administrator come to our play. You should support all programs in the school.” Besides not being promised any repairs, drama hasn’t seen a single administrator at one of their plays in two years. WEEKLY POLLLast Week's Poll Results!Last week we at Ambush! asked the readers if they missed school August 21st due to the solar eclipse and 75% of poll takers said they did, while 25% said they didn't. When asking the reason as to why poll takers missed school on the 21st 50% of Ambush! poll takers said it was for their cultural beliefs, 17% said they wanted to observe traditions, and the remaining 33% just wanted to miss school.
What's Cooking in Culinary?: Vanilla Coconut Macaroon Cookiesby Angelic Martinez '19
Overall, the process of making these macaroons was about 40 minutes. 20 minutes preparing the food and the baking took 20 to 25 minutes to cook. The students really enjoyed making this recipe because it was a delicious thing to eat and they say it was worth the wait. A little known fact about macaroon cookies was that they were simple cookies made of almond powder, sugar and egg whites. They first original came from Italy, introduced by the chef of Catherine de Medicis (the queen of France) in 1553. The term “macaroon” has the same origin as the word “macaroni” both meaning “fine dough”. Literary Review: Faking Faithby Danica Daniels '21
As a couple of months fly by, Dylan and her boyfriend Blake were going strong, until he convinces her to do something she normally wouldn’t do. After letting everybody know what she had done, Blake breaks up with Dylan in the most horrible way possible. Dylan is left to deal with the consequences and humiliation. In the end she loses her best friends, the trust of her parents and is all on her own. For awhile she isolates herself from everybody and spends most of her time reading online blogs; After getting tired of doing the same thing Dylan is inspired by a Christian blogger named Abigail she starts her own blog. Dylan and Abigail start an online friendship and finally decide that Dylan should go to visit Abigail and her family. Not knowing much about each other Abi has no idea that Dylan is not actually a Christian, but eventually finds out the truth about Dylan and it puts a lot of stress on their friendship. Upon returning home and unsure about how things will turn out Dylan is surprised that her mom is spending time with her and not at work. Well, let’s just say that things were almost back to normal for Dylan when she returned home. I wasn’t so sure how I would like about this book or what I would think about it, but I have to say that it really did interested me. “Faking Faith” really did surprise me because of how honest it was. So I do not have anything bad to say about it. If you like to read but you cannot find a good book that interests you, go to the library and check out “Faking Faith” by Josie Bloss. Artist Appreciation: Noah Begayby Christina Maldonado '19 Guess what Ambush! Readers? There is a new edition to the Arts & Culture section; We’d like to introduce our newest column, “Artist Appreciation.” It is here that we publicly show off the talented students here at Gallup High. The Gallup High artists consist of creative minds, and a variety of styles. Our first interviewee is eleventh grader, Noah Begay. Artist are here to share their experiences of discovering who they are. Do you know who you are? Question: When did you first know you wanted to be an artist? Begay: I always knew I wanted to be an artist, I think that I had a lot of creativity at a young age and it just stuck. When we would do arts and crafts in school, I always enjoyed it way more than the other kids did. I also grew up with art supplies within an arm’s reach. My father liked to draw and always had sketchbooks, paint, and pastels, this came handy. It wasn’t long before I learned to use these materials to express myself. This would later set the stage for my dreams of becoming a makeup artist. Question: What kind of art do you primarily work on? Begay: I don’t like to limit myself when it comes to art, because I find creativity in everything. By that I mean I don’t always like to just paint on a canvas or draw in a sketch-book. Sometimes I like to sew or even write and I consider that art. It just depends on how people seem to interpret what it is that you’ve created. Question: Is there a specific style of art you do? Why? Begay: Well in the instances when I do plan on drawing or painting, I have a specific style I like to work in, and that is pop art. Roy Lichtenstein was a huge inspiration to me and is the reason why I began to work in this style in the first place. The over exaggerated features and dramatic scenarios were what intrigued me the most. However, I do add my own twist to whatever it is I am working on. Question: What inspires you? Why? Begay: Old Hollywood glamour, popular culture, and my own feelings are what inspire me. The style from the 1940’s through the 1960’s is something that will continue to amaze me. There is a vintage beauty that I always try to incorporate into my art because of this. Popular culture is also a big part of what I create. From movies to music and singers to actors I draw whatever makes me happy. As I said before, I use art to express myself. Art can be therapeutic and a good stress reliever, it helps to express emotions you can’t explain through words. Question: What is your favorite medium to work on as an artist? Begay: I like to work with all types of materials, but if I had to choose, it would be a regular old sketchbook and some pens and pencils. The reason I say this is because sometimes when you’re on the go or just have a sudden “aha” moment it’s really easy to forget your ideas in a matter of seconds. So if you always have a sketchbook on hand you can quickly jot down the idea or even sketch it out. I also like to use a sketchbook because sometimes I just don’t feel like painting or using another form of media, so I use a sketchbook instead. Restaurant Review: Taco Bellby Ethan Chavez '19 It’s a nice taco place to eat at. Some people might have their own favorite place to eat tacos, like at home or at Del-Taco or a local restaurant. But some people like Taco Bell. If it’s a night out with some friends, then Taco Bell is the place to be. They don’t just have tacos; you have different varieties of food like nachos, burritos, or cinnamon twists. Taco Bell is the place to be most likely if it's a really hot day and there's nothing cold to drink at home. Then you can head over to Taco Bell to grab yourself a nice cold large drink or one of those freezies. But a downside to Taco Bell is some items costing more than they should. Like having a burrito that would cost 2 or more dollars. That’s not a good price. Some people might pay more or pay less. It really depends on what they want and what they get. Like a bean burrito might cost up to a dollar or less. Like those new dollar burritos like burrito supreme or a regular bean burrito. But in my point of view, they are both good. You also have those $5 boxes to try. For example, that Double Chalupa box. It comes with two tacos, a burrito and the new double chalupa. Its very good and also a good price for a box that comes with 4 items. It would be good with a nice large drink. Taco Bell might have some good deals as well. So if you're out and about with some friends, and you’re hungry, and you just have 10 dollars, stop over at Taco Bell and buy yourself some burritos, tacos or the $5 box. WEEKLY POLL
Last Week's Poll Results!Last week, 20% of Ambush! Poll takers said if given the chance to draw an intimate/animate object, they'd draw animals. 20% said they'd draw celebrities, 20% said they'd draw fictional characters, and the remaining 40% said they'd choose to draw buildings.
Restaurant Review: Fried Ice Cream at the Chili Factoryby Derek Curely '19
This treat is great for anyone who loves coconut or has a sweet tooth. The setting of the service got crowded at times, but was mainly mild, and the employees are friendly with a fast service. As a rating I would give this dessert a 4/5 leaving, one out mainly because the treat is prepackaged. Despite the prepackaging, the fried ice cream treat at the Chili Factory is a nice treat for coconut lovers and those with a sweet tooth. The Sophomore That Took Gold at SkillsUSABy Angelic Martinez '19
Joel has amazing support from his parents that pushes him to better himself. Rivera got into State because of Mrs. Jones, the instructor of the Culinary Arts class here at Gallup High. Mrs. Jones had asked Rivera if he wanted to go to a culinary skill competition in Albuquerque and he had said yes. Joel trained for a mere 2 weeks instead of 4 months for this skill competition. It’s amazing how a person who is new and offers little experience can manage to win state. He had competed with 50 states including Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Joel prepared his food by whatever takes the most time because time is everything in a competition. For his finale dish he had made a sauted chicken with a parmesan sauce, parmesan orzo pasta, then a pho soup and a garden salad. Joel felt like he couldn’t win state at all because it was barely his second year and he felt he didn’t have that much experience compared to the others, but with that little experience he had he was able to come up on top. His overall experience was great because he met a lot of new people and it had many great opportunities along the way. Joel had stated, “I would do it again in a heartbeat.” WEEKLY POLLMay Poll Results!100% of Ambush! Poll takers said they would like to see more murals at Gallup High School. 33% of Ambush! Ambush! Artby Sage Addington '18 Ambush! Art is a branch recently started from GHS Ambush! Ambush! Art is an arts and literature magazine put together by Ambush!'s Sage Addington; The magazine contains work from seven different Gallup High artists. Hopefully the 2018 issue of Ambush! Art will feature art from even more talented students and staff from Gallup High. Unfortunately, the arts magazine ran into some trouble towards the end of production; GHS Ambush! Doens't have the funds to print full, color pages, so for that reason many edits were made. The magazine underwent hefty construction with every page being transferred into half-pages and some artwork having to be sacrificed because they either didn't appear as well in black in white or may bleed.
