October Rotary Seniors of the MonthBy Raechelle Sandoval '18 Almost every month GHS teachers vote on seniors from a list of exemplary boys and girls, decided on at the beginning of year. A boy and girl are decided on every month. When the boy and girl are decided on, their names are removed from the list. All the students on this list must meet a higher grade point average, and have certain characteristics, such as character and leadership. For the month of October Lucia Kezele and Kevin McKennon were picked as the Rotary Seniors of the Month from Gallup High School. I asked Kevin and Lucia a few questions about being Rotary Senior of the month. Where do you want to go to school?Kezele: I want to go to Oklahoma State University. McKennon: I want to go to college at either Texas A&M, Fort Lewis, or ASU. What are your plans after high school?Kezele: I plan on going to college out of state; most likely to Oklahoma State University, and getting my degree in sociology with an emphasis in criminology. I want to minor in psychology. During college I am hoping to be part of a sorority and I want to try out for the dance team at the college. I want to stay involved in community service. After college I plan on staying in the south, getting my doctorate, and working with the FBI as a criminal profiler. McKennon: I plan on going to college and majoring in business to become a stockbroker. But after I get my degree I’d like to enlist in the Marines before beginning my career. How does it feel to be Rotary Senior of the Month?Kezele: I was kind of surprised. I didn’t expect it because they hadn’t mentioned anything to any of the seniors yet about nominations. It was a great feeling though, to be recognized for all the work I do. McKennon: I guess that being a Rotary Senior doesn’t really impact my day-to-day life much, but it’s very reassuring to know that there is the possibility of having an extra way to pay for college if I am selected as Senior of the Year. Are there any other comments you would like to make?Kezele: I want to thank my parents because they’ve always been by my side and continue to encourage me. They don’t push me to work as hard as I do, they know I’ll push myself so they always encourage me and be there when I’m down. I also want to thank my boyfriend for the same reasons as my parents, my siblings for giving me something to compete with, and my grandma for always watching over me. To any underclassmen: take it seriously. You really think you have all the time in the world and you don’t. One bad semester can mess up your chances for some great scholarships as well as other opportunities. Try your hardest now. McKennon: I’d just like to thank the members of the school who picked me to have the honor of being Senior of the Month, and giving me this grand opportunity. They are giving all GHS students the opportunity to design a new poster and submit it for use. This poster will be used for advertising purposes, and will be displayed throughout Gallup McKinley County Schools. All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, November 15th, and the winner will be announced on Friday, November 17th. This is a picture of the art classroom. In this picture you can see the work space in which students work. If you look around you can see all the pictures and drawing on the walls. Just by looking at this picture you get a clear indication on what this classroom is all about. | This is a picture of the computer classroom. When you look at this picture you will see how the teacher reacts with her students, and how the students react with their teacher. Now if you were in the classroom you would feel a very warm feeling, everyone in this picture was super happy and I really think this picture conveys that. If you look in the back you'll see the computers where these students work. |
This room is the JROTC classroom. In this picture it highlights what they teach and do in this picture. If the camouflage tables, and the army pamphlets didn't tip you off this is a class is all about the armed forces. The kids don't actually spend most of their time in the classroom they spend their time outside, doing physical activities and playing games. |
Ms. Savage teaches both Freshman and Senior level English. She was inspired to become a teacher by her 7th grade teacher, Ms.Gage, also an English teacher. Ms.Savage describes her as one of the best teachers she's had, and liked how she was more open about her personal life to her students than most of her teachers. She also said she learned more about the world because of how her teacher opened up to the students. Ms. Savage says it is hard to open up to students because she "thought of it differently" when she was a student. Ms. Savage said, “I was like yeah, why don't more teachers do that? But then when you’re a teacher and you are standing up there it is really vulnerable because you are telling everyone about your life and mistakes you've made.” Ms.Savage decided to become a teacher through college because when she was applying for college she didn't really know what she was doing because her parents were not from the United States and only her father to went to college in the UK. |
“So for me I had no idea how to apply for college and in my school it was kind of assumed that if you wanted to go to college it was because your parents had or someone in your family had and they’ll help you and that's you on your own time, like we are not going to talk about that here. And that was really hard for because I like really didn't know what I was doing. I was 17 years old and I couldn't really figure out like this really big life decision.”
