Interview with Soccer Player Jarom Martinezby Alizay Chavez '21
Earlier this week the soccer team finally won a game; Jarom was happy about it and so was the rest of the team. Soccer has changed Jarom’s life. He has learned how to be a better person because of soccer, it’s helped him with qualities such as sportsmanship. Martinez wants to win every game, but that is not always the case. Even though, he might not win every game he plays he still has fun. Soccer has changed “the way [he talks] about soccer” and how much he watches it now. Jarom loves to play soccer; to him, soccer is the best sport in the world. Nothing compares to soccer. Jarom finds so much joy in playing soccer, just being able to play soccer makes him happy. It gives him life. It has helped him push through life’s daily struggles. After winning his first game, he had felt an amazing feeling that went through him. Joel Hernandez on Gallup High's Upcoming Homecoming Gameby Rubi Reyes '21 Many Bengal students feel very nervous about the homecoming game on Friday. How will our football team do? Will we be defeated or will we be victorious? I sat down with football player Joel Hernandez and got to ask him a few questions. When asked, “How do you feel about Homecoming?” He answered with, “ I feel like I am going to have a walk in the park homecoming game.” Gallup High will be facing Shiprock High on Friday September the 15th at 7pm. Joel responded to my question, “How do you think you guys will do?” and said, “As far as my team goes I feel like they’re about 85% ready to take them on.” I asked him, “Why do you like playing football?” To that he said “It's what I do. Some people sing, some people dance, and I play football.” WEEKLY POLL Last Week's Poll Results!Last week we asked Ambush! readers what fall sport they pay the most attention to and 33.3% of poll takers said football, 33.3% volleyball, and 33.3% soccer.

In the last two minutes of the game it was time for the defense to get into scoring and in those two minutes Kobe Chee came up with an interception running 70 yards back scoring the final touchdown of the game, having the Bengals pull out a 33-0 and having them start the season 1-0. Next week Gallup is set to play Thoreau at home on September 8th. The Blazing Bengals, Interview with Tommy Halterby Dartania Thomas '21 I interviewed 9th grader Tommy Halter and asked him a couple questions about the game against Bernalillo. I asked him a few questions. Question: How do you think you performed during the game against Bernalillo Friday night? Halter: You know it’s a win but there's stuff i can improve on but i think i did alright. Question: How do you plan to improve or continue to do next game? Halter: It comes down to hard work on and off the field, you know on some days I go and left and then study all my plays so when it is time to go on the field I am ready. Question: How did you prepare for Friday nights game against Bernalillo? Halter: I try to get my mindset ready and just take advantage of my opportunities so I can prepare for the upcoming games. Question: What did you learn from the game and what to do next time? Halter: I learned that you don't get many opportunities in football so just take advantage of them and next time I will. Question: What was your favorite part of the game against Bernalillo? Halter: WIINNING!!!! Question: How does it feel to be a freshman on a varsity team? Halter: Oh man, it's awesome! I dreamed about making varsity and when I did it, it was great but now I just need to keep working hard and show doubters why I deserve to be on varsity. WEEKLY POLLLast Week's Poll ResultLast week we asked Ambush! readers if they think the football team could make it to state and 50% of Ambush! poll takers said, "Yes, BENGAL PRIDE!" and the other 50% said, "No, the PRIDE is weak in me." Bengals Volleyball Quiet Stormby Meche Williams '19
Question: What are some improvements you can make and how do you plan to do it? Lynn: We just need to communicate better, we need to keep our momentum going. You know, as a team we need to stay up, when we're playing we need to stay ahead by points, by rallies. We can't stoop down and we need to keep the momentum going, keep the motivation going. That's what we need to work on as a team is communication and, as well as moving our feet. I think sometimes we get stuck standing, and so that's what we need to work on is them moving their feet, letting them get to where the ball is at rather than just standing. Question: Who do you feel stood out the most in tonight's game? Why? Lynn: I would say Kendall Toadlena, like I said we've been practicing a lot during the summer and in the first two weeks of school and everything we've been working on she displayed on the court with her serving, passing, blocking, and hitting. So, she was on fire tonight! I’m really proud of her, because what she works on during practice she actually put on the court tonight, so she did very well. Question: Is there an important match coming up that you're looking forward to? Lynn: We're always looking for district; right now we want to make sure that we’re practicing enough, that's our number one goal is to go into district and make sure that we beat every team that we go into district against. We’re practicing right now. You know, we have a couple of more teams coming up, we have Crownpoint, we have Grants, we have Shiprock, we have Navajo Prep. We can use those as practice games for our actual game when we go into district! We want to have a winning record this year. Question: What are your thoughts about this season? Lynn: I’m really excited, we have three returning seniors, we have a couple of eighth graders stepping up and moving up to play varsity. The girls are actually doing a lot of team bonding, like get-togethers. They're really playing well together, they’re talking and communicating off the court which, you know, is gonna help us when they play on the court. We'll do pretty well, I’m pretty excited about it. The Dodger's Quest to Make Historyby Zach Wargo '20
Only two teams in the majors have reached the 116 win mark, as it is rare for a team to be this dominant in a 162 game season. The two teams that hold the record are the 1906 Cubs with a record of 116-36, and the 2001 Seattle Mariners with a record of 116-46, but neither team did not win the World Series. The Dodgers have been outscoring teams by an astonishing 218 runs this season, the most by any team in the majors. They have had a very abnormal record of 41-9 in their last 50 games Throughout the season it seems like the Dodgers have gotten better and stronger. Which will be very important for them to make a playoff run to win the World Series. Reaching 117 wins would be a huge milestone for the Dodgers this season, as they would be considered as one of the best teams of all time, but their main focus is being world champions in October and proving that they are the best team. Only time will tell if the Dodgers can keep winning and, if they can, they may be the greatest team to ever play the game of baseball. WEEKLY POLLS

With all the spring sports done, fall and winter sports have already started offseason programs open for any student that wants to participate in those sports for the next school year. Football has already begun its preseason, as they meet after school on the field getting ready for the next season. Cross Country will begin their preseason program on June 5th at 6AM going to 8AM every day. Volleyball has started preseason for about a few weeks now as they hold open gyms for anyone that wants to participate. There are many options to look forward too in Fall sports as Football and Volleyball will be competitive this season. Cross-Country will look forward to working hard as they will try to make it back to state for the 2nd consecutive year. Three winter sports have started preseason workouts, as boys basketball is going to school, and so has girls basketball is doing workouts after school also. They have both been working hard for both teams to get back to The Pit. All the sports will look forward to accomplishing a lot during the season. All of these offseason programs will be held during the summer and questions can be asked by talking to one of the coaches at the school. Miyamura Baseball Goes to Stateby Lucia Kezele '18 With just three seniors on their team this year, the Miyamura baseball team started their season off with a losing record of 1-5. The boys turned their mindsets around and came back to finish off the season as second in the district. The boys lost to Aztec for the district championship, but due to their ranking, 6th at the time, they were able to secure a spot in the state tournament. Miyamura played three games against Farmington to begin the tournament and won two out of three of those games. On May 11th they went up against the number one team in the state, Alamagordo, for a spot in semi-finals. Led by Coach Brian Silva the boys were able to knock out the top ranked team 2-1. The boys advanced to the semi-finals round of the state tournament where they played Albuquerque Academy. Sadly, the Patriots were knocked out by Academy, losing the game 7-3. The boys had an amazing season being the first baseball team, in four years, to make it past the first round of state. MAY POLLS
