College Football’s Best set to Square off on January 1stby Zach Wargo '20 With College Football’s season coming to an end, the annual College Football Playoff had to pick their top four, deciding who would get a shot at becoming National Champions on January 8th. Clemson, Oklahoma, and Georgia show the country why they are deserving of a national title with dominating wins against conference rivals. While No. 8 Ohio State pushed past No. 4 Wisconsin with a 27-21 to win the Big Ten Title, and No. 6 Georgia dominated No. 2 Auburn in the SEC Title game with a 28-7 victory. The final rankings were released early Sunday morning, with the country already knowing who were the top three teams in the country, No.1 Clemson, No.2 Oklahoma, and No.3 Georgia. No.5 Alabama did not play this past Saturday, as they did not reach their conference title game, as they had to sit and wait what their fate would be on selection Sunday, if they would also get a shot at winning a national title for the second time in three years, or if No.8 Ohio State would make the chance at making the College Football Playoff for its third time in four years. The Final rankings were released as No.1 Clemson will play No. 4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on January 1st at 6:45 P.M to decide which team will move onto Atlanta for the National Championship. This matchup features the title game from the past two years, as both teams have split, with Clemson beating Alabama 35-31 earlier this year in the 2017 National Title game. The second semifinal game will feature No. 2 Oklahoma against No.4 Georgia on January 1st at 3 PM in the legendary Rose Bowl Game. This is the Sooners second appearance in three years in the playoff, while the Bulldogs first appearance in the playoff, seeking its first national title since 1980. The Lady Bengals Volleyball team qualified for state taking a total of 13 girls to state alongside with 3 coaches. On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, the team left after school to Rio Rancho for pool play the next day. The next day they headed to the Santa Ana Star for their first round in pool play against St. Pius at 8pm to play 2 games of 25. The game started off a little slow, once it picked up speed and team was pumped up and motivated until Lucy Martinez got injured only about 15 minutes into the game and the team went a little down but they kept playing , they had a hard time coming back in the next game but Lucy gave the team an uplifting speech. They didn’t come out with the win in both games but the coach didn’t let them think on it to hard and told them to get ready for the next game against Kirtland. They warmed up right after playing St. Pius because they’ll be playing Kirtland. After warming up the game started the Lady Bengals won one set and lost the other, after that they would see their seating and it all come down to points. The team left to go eat some lunch, one of the coaches found out they had a 3 seed and came back by 2p.m to warm up and get mentally and physically ready for their game against Albuquerque Academy. The game started at 3:45, it was a regular varsity game, best of 5. The team was excited to have their laborer, Lucy Martinez, back on the court with them. The team started off good with their serves, sets, and hits, they worked as a team and won the first set. They won the first set 24- 26 and lost the other 3 sets. Even with the tough lost and a bit emotional for the seniors, coach Morris talked to the girls about how proud she was of them and told them to be proud of themselves because they had made it to state.

After the game interviews with the Carlsbad coach and the Miyamura coach were done. Mr. Zumbrun from Carlsbad wishes to do well in this tournament despite all the unfamiliar teams, while also hoping to see his team get better and continuously improve throughout the season (Carlsbad is ranked number 2 in the 6A coaches polls in New Mexico). On the other hand, Coach Gilbert from Miyamura thinks that next year they will do a lot better in the invitational, however thinks they will do pretty decent since they kept up with a 6A team. He believes that they his team did do pretty decent job so far, yet missed a lot of shots. Gilbert is a first year coach at miyamura yet has high hopes for his team and his future coaching career at miyamura hoping to break the curse the girls basketball team holds and go to state after 7 years. To do so he wishes his girls to build a bond as the season continues. As the day went on the Lady Bengals opened up their night against rival school Grants Pirates. The game started out with heavy pressure from both teams and back to back points. Most points gathered by the Bengals were in the paint, as they worked their middles well, and drived often. On the other hand the Pirates drove often and were sent to the line with the first quarter ending with a score of 13-10 Bengals up. With the start of the second quarter Ashley Antone switched the momentum to the Bengals, sinking a three, than obtaining a layup after a turnover right after. After that the Bengals caught fire making 30 points in the second quarter with 11 points all being from the free throw line. Despite the fire the Bengals obtained both teams stayed aggressive ending the first half with multiple fouls, Grants with 12 team fouls, and Gallup with 15. After the half Grants could not recover, with many missed shots, and thrown away balls. The Bengals continued to take off ending the game with 71-34 making it a tough break for the Pirates. Interviews with coaches were done after the game with both coaches giving great feedback of their teams. The Grants Pirates Coach Sanchez hopes to turn the game around in the tournament and gain momentum, with better defense, and more running of an offense. Throughout the season he also wishes to see his young team come together ,and mesh, while progressing everyday till the end. As for Coach Mcbroom the head coach for the Lady Bengals, he thinks the girls could've played better wishing to see more ball movement, and the girls to finish as the tournament continues. As for the season the goal is to see improvement every day; doing so he thinks his girls have a good opportunity to make state if they continue to work well and flow together throughout the season. Miyamura Patriots will play the Winslow Bulldogs at 1:30 pm on December 1st, while the Gallup Bengals will play Tohatchi Cougars at 7:30pm on Friday night. Ezekiel Elliot Charged with Domestic Violenceby Reylena Tsosie '21 Ezekiel Elliott was born on July 22, 1995. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round and the fourth overall pick in 2016. He is a running back for the Dallas Cowboys. Tiffany Thompson accused Elliot for domestic violence back from when he was in college at Ohio State University in early 2016. If he is found guilty this will be the third time in three months that the NFL has found Elliott guilty of domestic violence. Elliott was supposed to be suspended for the first six games of the 2017 season. With an interview with Erin Andrews she asked him why he didn’t take the first six games suspension. He said that’s not who he is. His suspension was supposed to begin November 5th but, a federal court in New York blocked his suspension for the fourth time this year, and he ended up playing against the Kansas City Chiefs. Luckily Elliott and the Cowboys won 28-17. During that game he made a go ahead touchdown. Elliott’s suspension started November 12th and will miss the next six games on the Cowboys schedule, starting against the Atlanta Falcons. Meanwhile, he left the United States to clear his head and to train elsewhere during the six week span. The Cowboys got crushed playing the Falcons 27-7. Without Tyron Smith, Sean Lee, and Elliott they did not play during the game. December 1st is his court date to determine the rest of his suspension. If, he is found guilty he will be suspended for four games, if otherwise he will play December 10th against the New York Giants. http://www.tmz.com/2017/08/11/ezekiel-elliott-domestic-violence-girlfriend-nfl/

Dodgers took the win 3-1. November 1st: Game 7: Final game the world series score is tied 3-3. Congratulations to the Houston Astros for winning the World series. “I knew if it wasn’t a missile, or a ball I could turn two on, I was going to the plate immediately,” Bregman said. “It was huge. It gave us some momentum.” Photo by Houston Chronicle Astros Win First World Series In Franchise HistoryZach Wargo 20' The City of Houston has gone through a roller coaster of emotions over the past few months, as back in late August, Hurricane Harvey devastated the 4th largest city in America by parking itself over the area for five days and dumping a historic rainfall of 51 inches of rain, causing massive flooding and eventual devastation to the millions that live in the area. The tragic hurricane took 77 lives, and left billions of dollars of damage, which will leave the city rebuilding for many years. Many people in the city did not know what they would be coming back to, once the flood waters receded. Amid the devastation, Houstonians held onto one hope; that their Major League Baseball team, who had finished the season with a 101-61 record (the third best record in the Majors) would make it to the World Series . They had made the playoffs as a number two seed, entering the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox. The Astros had cruised past the Red Sox in a dominating fashion, their next opponent would be the New York Yankees. Following the Yankees come back from two games down against the Cleveland Indians, winning the series in five games, no one thought the Yankees had a chance with a restless bullpen and players. The Astros had taken the first two games, heading to the Bronx with a two game to none lead. The Yankees had suddenly won three straight games, putting pressure on the Astros to win two straight games back at home; which they did, putting them in their second World Series in franchise history. The World Series showcased two 100 win teams over the season, with the Dodgers (104-58) having the best record in baseball and the Astros (101-61) with the third best record in baseball. This series was historic as Houston had gone through so much with Hurricane Harvey and trying to clinch their first World Series title in it’s history; while the Dodgers were going for their first title since 1987. The Dodgers took game one, then the Astros fought back in extra innings with a 7-6 win, heading back to Houston, tied one to one in game wins. Houston took game three; then The Dodgers bounced back with a 6-2 win in game four. Game five was the most exciting World Series game, and also the second longest, lasting five hours and seventeen minutes. Game five set a records for the most home runs in the World Series and for the length of the game. Game six was exciting, as the Dodgers stole game six in the top of the 9th, scoring three runs in the last 5 innings. The World Series was heading to its second game seven in the second straight year, the first time since 2001-2002. Matt Slocum/Associated Press Game seven, possibly the two greatest words in baseball, the stakes were high, and the eyes were on the prize for the Dodgers and the Astros. Los Angeles was the home for game seven, where it would crown a world champion. The game started off with a George Springer double in the first inning, then a stolen base. Springer scored off a throwing error by the Dodgers; and later, Albuquerque native and game five hero, Alex Bregman helped score the second run of the game. The Dodgers failed to score many times, which helped lead the Astros through most of game seven. George Springer, who would later be named World Series MVP hit a three-run home run in the 2nd inning, giving the Astros a 5-0 lead. The Astros would hang on, and win its first world series in its history, and it’s first World Series in the state of Texas. The celebration in Houston had begun, they will celebrate the world champion Astros with a parade on Friday, November 3rd at 2:00 pm. It was by far the most important meet of the year for the six teams in the district (Gallup, Miyamura, Bloomfield, Farmington, Aztec & Kirtland Central) . In the boys race, your Gallup Bengals, who had ran hard all year, took 4th place overall, just missing out on a spot at state. There was a lot of bias against the flag, as all eyes were on the Cowboys Monday night football game against the Cardinals. What were the Cowboys going to do sit, kneel, or sit in the locker room? What they did was very different they locked arms and kneeled before the flag separated. Once the flag did separate, they all stood up and put their right hand over their chest while locking arms to represent both sides. Jerry Jones said, “ I just feel so strongly that the act of recognizing the flag is a salute to the country and all of the people that have sacrificed so that we can have the liberties we have.” He then pointed to his players, “If you do not honor and stand for the flag in the way that a lot of our fans feel that you should, then you won’t play.” The Dallas Cowboys won against the 49ers, 40-10, Sunday, October 22. A student Alexis Escarsega at Gallup High says he agrees with Jones, “You should honor the flag because our founding fathers sacrificed so much for our country. The least we can do is stand and honor our country.” by Dallas Morning News
Should E-Sports be a Sport?by Rocco Addington '20 Are Esports actual sports? This has been a very hot topic over the previous years. In July of 2014, ESPN aired the world series of the popular game Dota 2. After the game the controversy started. On the website Twitter, people blew up, saying negative things and arguing with the supporters of this game. Most people will argue that videogames are not sports because they don't have physical activity, nor do they have all the other fundamental ideas of sports. Is that true?
Video Games are one of the most popular things in the world, the world of League of Legends aired pulling in over 32 million viewers on twitch. A website that is not very well known I might add. Meanwhile the NBA aired a game at the same time, only pulling in 28 million million viewers. Now numbers aren't everything, they're so much more that makes Esports a sport. Professional video game leagues are almost the exact same as other sports. For example, League of Legends a MOBA or “massive online battle arena,” has 20 teams split into two divisions by continent. The teams are decided on the best teams which is different than traditional sports, traditional sports pick their teams by which are in the official league. Some may argue that official League of Legends does it even better than traditional sports. The teams are better to professional Esports players practice on an average of 8/12 hours a day. Some of these teams even live together. The players have to be in top condition to be able to participate, they have to have quick reflexes, skill, and more. Some of these players even risk serious injury, like carpal tunnel. Hell they are even sponsored by the same people to. Do you think that Esports should be considered a sport? President Trump Against Athletesby Zach Wargo '20 It is not a normal, everyday event that the President criticizes our professional sports and athletes. During a speech on September 22nd, he stated that every football player or professional athlete should be fired if they kneel or don’t stand for our National Anthem. President Trump also called out every professional football player by calling them a “Son of a B****.” The President also uninvited the NBA Champion, Golden State Warriors after star point guard Stephen Curry said he was not going to visit the White House. President Trump stated that kneeling or not standing for our flag was disrespectful and every athlete who does not stand should be punished. Are You a Student Before an Athlete?by Lucy Martinez '18 Many have heard stories of athletes not being able to play due to grades, or not going to division one schools because of bad GPAs. Some say this occurs due to coaches being too lenient, or schools not caring enough, however the only people that know the bottom of this topic are athletes themselves. Other factors can occur during the failing of athletes in academics, like stress, and constant missing of school. To get a better inside look interviews were done with 4 athletes that all play or participate in different and multiple sports in their high school career. Zach Wargo who is a sophomore at Gallup High and has been participating in cross country and track for two years now. Wargo’s academic average is a 3.8. Jacob Ramirez and Johnny BlueEyes are both sophomores at Gallup High and have both participated in multiple sports. BlueEyes has and continues to participate in football, basketball, and baseball. Ramirez is involved in football and basketball. Both students average a 3.0 GPA. Kendall Toadlena is a senior at Gallup High who has participated in volleyball, and softball; she participated in softball for 3 years and volleyball for 5. Her average GPA is a 3.8. Although these students have excelled and continue to in their academics or sports it's obvious that it’s all up to the student. Every single athlete claimed that they are students before athletes, showing that there is a standard they must meet here in Gallup High school sports. Hopefully this continues for the younger athletes that were interviewed, and that it is a widespread idea for all who participate in sports in Gallup High and worldwide. "...It's Exciting."by Rubi Reyes '21 I had the chance to talk to a former Cross Country runner Mikaela McCraith and asked her a few questions. I asked Mikaela “How do you like running for the Gallup High Cross Country team?” She answered with, “It’s good, fun, and exciting being able to run for Gallup High.” Mikaela says she has been running for three years now. She also says that she is a Junior Varsity runner. When asked “Why do you like to run?” Mikaela answered, “Running is fun. It gives me something to do. I also just like running a lot and to me it is really fun.” I asked her one last question, “Do you feel you have improved over the three years you have ran?” She said, “Yes definitely I've improved my running over these three years.” The next Cross Country meet is on October 7th 2017 at Los Lunas and starts at 8am. by Alizay Chavez '21
This past Monday August 11th Gallup High had their annual class games. Each class had to be at the public school stadium at 6:30. The senior class was escorted by the Gallup fire department. The senior class arrived in blue trucks. The first game that the classes competed in was the funny food relay. Each class had three people at each of the points. The first person had to eat apple sauce and throw away their trash before running to the next person. The second person had to eat a lemon. They also had to throw their trash away before running to the next person. The last person had to find a piece of gum in a pie and chew it. It was the last person’s job to run to the finish line. The freshmen won the relay.
The second game was bucking bull. Each class had to have two girls and two boys compete. First the boys had to tie a balloon to the back of their belt loop. The boys got down on their knees and the girls got on top of their backs. Each class had to pop the other classes balloons. The juniors took the win with none of their teams gone. The next game was the bridge relay. Each class had 5 girls and 5 boys compete. The juniors won. The fourth game was the bat spin. Each class had students spin around the bat. The juniors won this as well. The next was the orange pass. There were 5 boys and 5 girls lined up. They had to pass the orange only using their necks. Juniors won. The last game of the night was tug of war. The first round was seniors against freshmen. The poor freshmen lost. The second round was sophomore against juniors. The final round was seniors against sophomores. The seniors took the win. WEEKLY POLL
